The Gun Room - 1st April

In recent weeks I have been getting out after the pigeons. As soon as the shooting season is over many of the estates that have been off limits all season suddenly become open for business and the job of controlling the vast numbers of woodpigeons starts in earnest.

Holt’s have been called in to clear the premises for John Dickson of Edinburgh. Dickson, famous as the ‘Purdey of the North’, started in 1795 going on to make many memorable guns, notably the ‘Round action’.

The Gun Room - 1st March

Spring is such a time of expectation, it’s almost as if the whole of the countryside is just waking up.

The Gun Room - 1st March

Shooting recently with Richard Gray at Scrivelsby with a team I had not met, as usual people enjoy showing me their various guns. One in particular was a Robert Churchill with 25” barrels, a self-opening premier model being used at the end of the season with 32 grams and 5 shot to some effect. Note the fine detailing and fancy back action, imagine how difficult this gun was to stock!

In recent years, thanks in part to the emergence of ladies only clay shooting club Femmes Fatales, the UK has seen a rise in the number of women regularly taking part in shooting sports.
