This year marks the tenth anniversary of Myers Café Tea Room. Founded on the same traditional values that the family have applied to their well known bakery business for the last forty years, the tea room in Horncastle has become a popular rendezvous for customers of all ages and backgrounds.

Ideal for breakfast, light lunches or afternoon tea, depending on the time of day, you could be eating alongside a local walking group, students and their teachers, ladies who lunch, an informal business meeting or their clients who return regularly.

Robert Myers and his sister, Marie, are the latest generation of the family to take up the reins of working in the business, while father Richard and uncle Michael still run the bakery.

“We cater for as broad a range of tastes as possible because we want customers to always come in and find something on the menu to their taste,” Robert explained. “Going that extra mile is important to us to make sure people are happy.”

In 2008 the Café Tea Room was refurbished. Contemporary duck egg colours, new tables and chairs and soft furnishings have created a relaxing and stylish room. Earlier this year, Robert, Marie and their Aunty Mandy launched the new menu. Robert has sourced delicious coffees from a unique, award winning coffee supplier called ‘Grumpy Mule’ and included a broader choice of options, all their coffee being fair trade, organic and certified. Robert listens to his customers and one of the main aims was to identify the local sources of the food more clearly and to explain to customers that if they have enjoyed products they have eaten, many of them can be bought to take home from the Myers Bakery or Myers Deli next door.

Having these other shops so close, also allows them to be flexible when serving customers in the tea room. “If a child wants a gingerbread man, all we have to do is go next door to the bakery,” continued Robert, “and we can do the same with food from the deli.”

Marie designed the menu herself as part of the merchandising she oversees for all the businesses including the new home and giftware store, the ‘Country Stile’, which the family opened on High Street last year.

As bakers of Lincolnshire Plum Bread, Myers have always been strong supporters and promoters of the county’s wonderful local produce and there is plenty on the menu in the tea shop and available from the bakery or deli. Myers bake all their own meats; there are Oslinc burgers and Mountains sausages, haslets and pork pies; local cheeses are served with Myers Plum Bread and the breads, cakes and pastries are made in their bakery.

There is a daily menu board which runs alongside the main menu from Thursday to Saturday. These will be a choice of two or three hot courses and desserts. Produce is often bought at the Farmers’ Market, fresh the same morning.

‘Deli Delights’, the catering division of the company specialises in buffets, packed lunches and special events and keeps three staff in the sandwich department very busy.

While Robert and Marie have to keep up with paperwork, they are also very hands on, helping to support their loyal and efficient team who work in the business.

“We are a family business”, said Robert “and those family values are very important to us, but we also continually look for ways to improve our service, offer new products and make people aware that Horncastle has so much to offer.” The company ran a radio campaign in April which will run again this month and Horncastle Summer Festival, on 12th June will be a major celebration for the town.

Myers will be at the East of England Show, Peterborough, 17th, 18th and 19th June and at Lincolnshire Show 22nd and 23rd June, in the Tastes of Lincolnshire Food Court. Myers will also be attending the East Midlands Food and Drink Festival at Melton Mowbray on 1st and 2nd October.
