The new MG ZS is described by its maker as the next chapter in its history, and it’s probably its most important.
It’s a small SUV with a big task, since it enters a booming class teeming with rivals – if not outright quality. Among them are the Citroën C3 Aircross, Kia Stonic, Renault Captur, SEAT Arona and Vauxhall Crossland X, to name but a few. To stand out, the ZS gets a starting price that undercuts those rivals by a couple of thousand pounds.

The best feature about the ZS’s interior is its roominess. Up front, space is good and on a par with the rest of the class, with plenty of head and leg room for the driver and passenger. Leg room in the back is certainly up there with the most spacious small SUVs, too.

Similarly, the boot is an impressively large size, even taking into account the noticeable wheel arch encroachment. Indeed, the ZS has a comfortably bigger boot than that in the SEAT Arona and Hyundai Kona, although the Citroën C3 Aircross beats them all in that respect.

The ZS’s low pricing and seven-year, 80,000-mile standard warranty both help the car stand out. Its list price comfortably undercuts that of rivals, making it a cheaper cash buy.

The standard equipment is impressive throughout the range, considering the ZS’s price. Along with the infotainment touchscreen, the entry-level ‘Explore’ models get 15″ steel wheels, Bluetooth and cruise control. The ‘Excite’ trim features 17″ alloy wheels, air conditioning and Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring, while the range-topping ‘Exclusive’ adds sat-nav, a rear-view camera and a leather-style interior.
