Albion Tea Rooms, Market Rasen
Well worth a visit and definitely a must if you are in Market Rasen is a call into the Albion Tea Room.
Owner Ron Stalford, his partner and their friendly staff are always on hand with a warm welcome and some delicious light bites and lunches. The tea room has all the charm of a bygone era with photographs and memorabilia decorating the walls while being impeccably clean and pristine, from the gleaming cutlery and glasses to the crisp tablecloths and vase of fresh flowers on each table.
The underlying ethos of the menu is good quality food, freshly and simply prepared to order. I chose from the Daily Specials board but the Lunch Menu includes plenty of British classic sandwiches and salads as well as homemade soup. The tasty baked ham from a local butcher, served with free range eggs and homemade wedges was tempting but I finally chose oven baked haddock with lemon and parsley butter, served with new potatoes and vegetables. It is hard to beat a beautifully cooked piece of fish and Ron had timed it to perfection. The fresh vegetables still had the right amount of crunch to them and the potatoes were sweet and delicately flavoured.
Other specials that day included roast leg of lamb, Lincolnshire sausage and mash, fresh dressed crab or a homemade quiche, all served with either creamy mash or new potatoes and vegetables, or a five bean casserole served with pesto mash.
As we head into autumn, Ron explained that the choices will soon reflect the demand for a variety of roasts and ‘comfort’ food.
To finish my lunch I couldn’t resist a slice of homemade date and walnut cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a cappuccino to follow. Very naughty and delicious!
Other diners were trying some of the other cakes and tarts on offer. The clean plates all round were self-explanatory.
You can start your day with breakfast at the Albion Tea Room and, as well as coffee and lunch, they serve afternoon teas.
Their very popular Christmas Lunch will be available from 1st December and is great value at £16.95 for three courses and coffee. You need to book in advance for this and their Christmas Day Lunch, which will include four courses with coffee for £49.95 per person.
Open Tuesday to Saturday for breakfast, coffee, lunch and afternoon teas.
