Lincolnshire Life August 2017 - Digital Copy
The beginning of harvesting is a timely reminder that summer does not last forever and it certainly spurs me on to get out across the county to enjoy as many events and fun days as possible. Especially important for all those who have now broken up from school and college too.
Top of my list is to visit the remaining Knights on the Lincoln trail to say that I have ‘bagged’ all 36. The Knight of the Skies and The Golden Knight which appear on our cover are two of my favourites.
At the end of the month I am planning to pack a picnic and head down to the wonderful time warp atmosphere of Syston Park Speed Trials. Hailed as Britain’s first race circuit in the first half of the last century, racing ended there in 1939. Three years ago a group of local vintage motor racing enthusiasts decided to recreate the spirit of these early scratch races on what remains of the original circuit. You can read more about this year’s event on page 94.
Our county is blessed with some exceptional landscapes and we regularly hear how much readers enjoy our walking features. This month we include the fifth contribution from Maxim Griffin. Maxim really evokes his personal experience of the walk but also highlights some of the historical context of landmarks and terrain. This month he is on a section of Roman road between Skegness and Lincoln. The walk begins on page 56.
Tucked away on the furthest corner of the county where the Trent, Ouse and Humber converge is the village of Alkborough. This historic and unspoilt community is home to Julian’s Bower, a labyrinth whose origin and age is still the subject of academic discussion. Robin Witting’s tour begins on page 130.
Our Best of Lincolnshire feature takes us on a gastronomic tour of the county; plenty of inspiration with exceptional produce for picnics and summer entertaining. While we are on the subject of food and drink, don’t forget that nominations are still open for the Lincolnshire Life ‘Taste of Excellence’ Food and Drinks Awards 2017.
Finally, come and say hello on our stand at Revesby Show on Sunday 6th August.
Hope you have a memorable month.
