Lincolnshire Life August 2019 - Digital Copy
High summer and we are hoping that the temperatures will climb slightly to reflect that. We enjoy our alfresco dining here at Lincolnshire Life and we have plenty of ideas to share with recipes, garden schemes and ways to create a beautiful space in which to entertain in your garden. Turn to our Gardens and Grills feature on page 28 to read more.
For those who enjoy the sea breezes, Penny Wainwright has been walking the Lincolnshire stretch of the England Coast Path and taking in the wonder of the wide open skies and the long sandy beaches of our coastline. Her feature begins on page 102. Meanwhile Maxim Griffin has been viewing our Humber coastline from a very different perspective at night. His walk and stargazing begins on page 98.
The Lincolnshire beaches will be packed with families this summer just as they have been for decades. For most these days will provide happy memories but for the mother of writer Laura Cumming there was a family incident which haunted her life. Yusef Sayed interviewed Laura shortly after her book On Chapel Sands was abridged as Radio 4’s Book of the Week. Yusef’s feature begins on page 44.
I had an invitation to spend a day at Oxcombe Pottery recently, primarily to interview Susanna Gorst before the launch of Doddington Hall’s Summer of Ceramics.
Susanna will be showing her own work as well as pieces from up to twelve of her students. I have never worked with clay before but some expert tuition helped me create two pots which have apparently survived their firing and glazing. I cannot wait to see them when Susanna brings them to the Hall next week. In contrast, one of the curators of the exhibition, Rebecca Blackwood, gives us an exclusive tour of the exquisite collections of porcelain built up by successive generations of owners of Doddington Hall for the past 300 years.
We look forward to meeting you at Revesby Show. It is always one of the highlights of the summer and is an action packed day out for the whole family. Bring a picnic when you come along.
Finally, the end of this month is the deadline for nominations for our ‘Taste of Excellence’ awards. Take note of your favourite venues while you are out and about and tell us why our judges need to visit.
Have an enjoyable and relaxing August.
