Lincolnshire Life February 2016 - Digital Copy
If, like me, one of your annual tasks is to plant out a new selection of spring bulbs and repot your tubs and baskets this is the time of year when the anticipation builds, as first the foliage appears and then the vibrant flowers come into bloom.
They are not only the heralds of even more garden glories to come but also such a morale booster on grey and still chilly days.
February is the month to head out to Lincolnshire gardens which open when their grounds are blanketed in snowdrops, aconites, crocuses and other spring varieties.
I visited Brightwater Gardens at Saxby to get a glimpse of what visitors will see during their Snowdrop Open Days which begin on 12th February. You can read more about this 21st century garden on page 22.
The Flying Scotsman is back on the rails this year after an extensive refurbishment. Our feature on page 46 gives the background to this work and also highlights two opportunities to see this famous engine in our county. Its Inaugural Run will be between King’s Cross and York at the end of this month. At the time of going to press the exact date has still not been confirmed but keep checking online at www.flyingscotsman.org.uk/events/ otherwise put 11th June in your diary, when Flying Scotsman is due to travel from Cleethorpes to Newcastle.
If you are a 4x4 owner you might be interested in our feature on page 100. A sixty-strong group of local drivers are looking for more members to join them in Lincolnshire 4x4 Response which helps support county communities at times of extreme conditions. Deep snow and seasonal flooding can leave rural homes and residents very isolated and this is when Lincolnshire 4x4 Response volunteers can come to their aid.
Finally, romance is in the air with our guide to Valentine’s Day Gifts and Dining Out.
Wishing you a fabulous February.
