Lincolnshire Life February 2017 - Digital Copy
Our stunning front cover image shows the beauty of a red kite close up. I have travelled backwards and forwards to Northamptonshire for many years and had noticed that the sight of kites soaring on the thermals was meeting me closer to the Lincolnshire border every time. Like me, Jarrod Cotter has observed their gradual move north into our county and his words and wonderful photographs explain why this once endangered bird is now a more common sight. Read more on page 44.
We have plenty of ideas to encourage you to get out and about in the county this month and even though the weather may not be inspiring there are rewards to be found.
To begin, lift your spirits with a visit to see snowdrops heralding the first signs of spring. Steffie Sheilds has been to meet Castle Bytham resident, Jackie Murray, an expert in this elegant flower. Steffie has also listed some of the Lincolnshire gardens which will be open to the public especially for snowdrop days. Learn more on page 24.
I know many readers enjoy a road trip around the county so set your sat nav to Scunthorpe and join in a treasure hunt which will be launched there this month. The prizes are especially cast gold artefacts which reflect the history and heritage of North Lincolnshire. Gold seekers, turn to page 74.
John Bennett laced up his walking boots to bring you another walk on Lincoln’s doorstep. The Swanholme Lakes area is an oasis for delightful flora and fauna, even in the colder months and John’s words and pictures which begin on page 90 guide you along the route.
Finally, Lincolnshire Life is one of the sponsors of the competition to find Miss Lincolnshire 2017. We have included photographs of all the contestants in this year’s pageant which will be held at Home, Lincoln on February 18th. We would like your help to find one of the category winners ‘Miss Lincolnshire Life Popularity’. I am sure there are faces you will recognise amongst the contestants so cast your vote for your favourite by texting their name. There is a charge for the text, so details are on the feature and good luck to all the entrants!
We hope you have a wonderful February.
