Lincolnshire Life November 2018 - Digital Copy

I must begin with a mention of our cover image. If you visit the Sea of Poppies at St Andrew’s Church, Heckington, the pathway of poppies volunteers created in the summer to publicise the event has now been used to make the cascades and curtains
of red for the exhibition’s installations. This commemoration of the Armistice, organised by Heckington 100, is one of many marks of respect and reflection which are being held across Lincolnshire. You can read more about Sea of Poppies on page 36 and further features and mentions of events throughout the magazine.

Steffie Shields includes a round-up of where ‘Battle’s Over’ commemorations are being held in her feature on page 26 which applauds a fitting restoration of Wyndham WWI Memorial Park in Grantham.

I had the pleasure of photographing two world record holders at their home in the Wolds last month. Michael and Janice Willrich are flight archers and between them hold more than fifty records. They had just returned from competing in the World Archery Flight Championships in Salt Lake City, USA. You can read Kate Chapman’s story on page 42.

Preparations for the Lincolnshire Life Taste of Excellence Awards Night on 1st November are in full swing as I write. I was one of four judges at the Chef of the Year cook-off at RAF College Cranwell two weeks ago. I must congratulate the six finalists who took part. We were treated to eighteen glorious dishes with marking neck and neck. Results for all our categories will be announced on the night, so I very much look forward to welcoming you to The Engine Shed for what promises to be a wonderful celebration of the best of Lincolnshire food, drink and hospitality.

Finally, we have the first of our Christmas Gift Guides in this issue. Shopping locally is the great way to support independent businesses. Their commitment to quality, choice and service is always exceptional. Have a browse; there are ideas for all the family which can really take the strain out of Christmas giving.

I must also mention our own annual subscriptions, local books section and Lincolnshire Flag gifts which are in our online shop, or you can call us on 01522 527127.

Wishing you a wonderful month ahead.
