Lincolnshire Life February 2020 - Digital Copy

This issue has plenty of tantalising glimpses of spring. I think we all know that nature will have something in store to delay those days when you can really begin to feel the warmth of the sun coming through but Steffie Shields’ gardening pages pay homage to the beautiful nodding heads of snowdrops.

The sequence of spring bulb varieties as they appear is reason enough to visit one or more of the exceptional gardens in Lincolnshire which are vibrant with seasonal colour. Steffie mentions a few of her favourites beginning on page 28.

Lincolnshire may not be densely populated but the county certainly punches above its weight when it comes to producing ground breaking talent. Kate Chapman interviewed Pro Flat Track racer, Leah Tokelove. It is a sport which as yet does not have women’s categories but Leah, who hails from Woodhall Spa, is travelling the world and excelling in competitions. Read more on page 32.

Kate also wrote a feature last autumn about the rediscovery of the burial site of explorer and cartographer, Matthew Flinders. His grave was found by HS2 archaeologists early last year as they excavated St James’ Burial Ground in London. The story has been spiked while a campaign to re-inter his remains in his home village of Donington was launched. Kate’s feature appears in this issue on page 92 now that a date has been confirmed for his return to the county of his birth.

Walking is one of the best ways to lift your spirits and keep fit. Regular readers will be familiar with the rambles of Maxim Griffin, our intrepid admirer of the Lincolnshire landscape and local curiosities (see page 89). A group who have got together to walk at home and abroad have named themselves the ‘Wild Geese’ – in homage to the film of the same name of course. You can read about the pleasure their adventures bring on page 73.

Finally, our town tours take in Gainsborough, Long Sutton and Sutton Bridge, as well as North and South Hykeham – towns which span the full geographic diversity of Lincolnshire but where vibrant businesses and communities are adding value every day to the quality of lifestyle for residents.

We look forward to seeing you out and about in our wonderful county this month.
