A century by the shore

The name James Braid is legendary to golfers. A five times Open winner between 1901 and 1910, Braid designed over 200 courses, one of which is the North Shore Golf Course.
2010 is the Hotel and Golf Club’s Centenary year and many special events have been and are taking place. James Braid’s great-great-granddaughter Fiona Collins, was welcomed recently by the hotel and golf club as she stayed in the hotel for a week in September, playing in many of the competitions. During this period the course was played in the order of holes that Braid originally designed the course in.

Skegness born and bred siblings Carolyn Wilkinson and William Mitchell are the proud owners of the hotel, which has been in their family ownership now for over a quarter of a century. Their investment over the years on the thirty-six en-suite bedroomed hotel and its facilities, are as impressive as the golf course.

The imposing Georgian hotel looks out over the course and the North Sea and is the closest hotel to the sea in Skegness and very possibly Lincolnshire too.

There is a busy steady flow of local golfers enjoying the facilities and many visitors coming predominantly from the Midlands for short stay golfing breaks. The local membership is thriving and welcomes any newcomers to the game with open arms. The Junior section of the membership is particularly popular. The Pro, John Cornelius and his assistant Nikki Chantry, have been especially instrumental in growing the Junior section and achieving the nationally acclaimed ‘Golf Mark’ for the club for its overall standards of excellence.

The hotel has a beautiful oak panelled dining room which is open seven days a week serving meals from set and á la carte menus. A very popular choice is the three-course Sunday Carvery served between 12.30pm and 2.30pm. The hotel is a member of Tastes of Lincolnshire and prides itself on its locally sourced and supplied produce. Various delicious meals and snacks are available throughout the day from the James Braid Bar, with relaxing views over the 9th and 18th holes.

The North Shore Hotel and Golf Club is especially popular as a wedding venue. Spectacular photography of the bride and groom on the beach is easy to achieve. The hotel holds a licence for civil weddings and can accommodate up to 130 guests banquet style. Menus are tailored to meet every couple’s individual requirements for their special day.

Companies looking to combine business with pleasure can hire boardrooms to accommodate as few as eight or the ballroom to accommodate up to 160 theatre style. There are plenty of relaxing break-out options, comfortable lounges, a round of golf or just a refreshing walk along the shore.

Special Christmas events include Bring a Party to a Party dinners, with overnight accommodation if required; a chill out three-day Christmas break to include Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day and a two-night New Year break which can include live music by Soul Summit and a four-course fabulous traditional New Year’s Gala meal.

James Braid would be delighted to see, one hundred years on, the success of his course. His great-great-granddaughter certainly seemed to enjoy the hotel and golf course when she stayed with her husband recently and like many do, has booked again for next year.
