Auctioneers of fine modern and antique guns are now the largest Sporting Auction House in Europe, specialising in sporting items and militaria.
Many of Holt’s customers are collectors, some casual, some in earnest – named shotguns, game counters, cartridge cases, place finders and in my case hammer gun locks. 12 bore hammer gun: no visible serial number, steel barrels with rebounding locks by Jenvey and Tite. We have never had items by them, yet they are recorded at 20 Watergate, Grantham in 1909, then Bertie Beaumont Jenvey only 1913-1924, finally 34 Westgate 1926-1928. The gun is out of proof so I have saved the graceful locks, they have no maker’s marks whatsoever. Most locks were made in Wolverhampton as part of a large industry, mostly completely disappeared. These are also unusual as the trigger sear makes up part of the bridle. However they certainly predate the above records to around 1875, so Jenvey and Tite were certainly in business sometime before. Recently a family contacted us with some pistols by a D Egg, to their surprise they made £12,000. Swiss born Durs Egg was one of the most respected gunmakers of the late 17th century. The duelling pistols demonstrate the latest features: gold lined touch holes and pans (to stop powder reaction to the steel); locks with rollers – to speed ignition; hair triggers with adjustable settings, all with wonderfully balanced light barrels. Mr Egg’s trademark large diamond chequering on each butt is present. Whether the pistols were used in anger is unknown but they are presented in their wooden case with accessories and represent a fine investment. I am pleased to make home visits for valuable items or call to come to a valuation day.
