Description
Welcome to our latest issue, which turns the spotlight on more of our county’s extraordinary people and must-visit events taking place this season.
Caroline Bingham caught up with Lincolnshire-based sculptor Nichola Theakston, who is one of the local artists exhibiting at Doddington Hall’s Sculpture Exhibition this month (see page 38).
Nichola, who creates evocative sculptures of animals, worked for almost 20 years as a ceramic artist producing small runs of limited edition sculpture exhibited at galleries, as well as at local events.
If you’re looking for an inspirational day out, this popular annual exhibition runs from 25th July to 6th September – don’t miss out!
Frequently found out and about reporting for us on countryside matters, Matt Limb found his sea legs as he set sail from Fosdyke Bridge with the dedicated crew of the 100-year-old sailing smack Victorious, which has been lovingly restored under its owner Henry Chamberlain, founder of the Coastal Exploration Company (p.66).
Built in 1923, Victorious was designed to earn her living gathering cockles, mussels and whelks from the sands and channels of The Wash and is historically linked to the waterways of Lincolnshire. Since being renovated, Victorious has found a new role, with guests invited to reconnect with the maritime heritage that helped shape this part of the county.
Back on dry land, Kate Chapman caught up with Lee Fox from Grimsby, who recently landed his dream job as a Beefeater at the Tower of London after a long career in the British Army (p.84).
During Lee’s six months’ probation, he had to learn the 9,000-word historical Story about the Tower verbatim and was mentored by one of his peers while he got to grips with his responsibilities – however, it remains a challenge Lee relishes: “This is one of the most special roles, watching so many years of history at night, to get to share that, I still get goosebumps when I witness it.”
Finally, if you’re a dedicated equestrian and eventing devotee, next month’s Defender Burghley Horse Trials (3rd-6th September) will already be firmly in your diary – don’t miss our special preview with the chance to win one of three pairs of season tickets and car passes to this prestigious event (p.102).
See you next month!
