Photographer Nigel Walker is creating an archive of how people feel about being alive today.

Five hundred people are to be photographed during 2026/27 in his studio at Ropewalk in Barton-upon-Humber. In return for free portraits he is asking the subjects to write up to 100 words explaining their feelings about their lives and any contemporary issues on their mind.

“Reactions have been wonderful so far,” says Nigel, “with people writing in both personal terms about their lives and in more general terms, for instance on climate change and AI.”

Nigel is now approaching 200 recorded portraits and the first hundred will appear in a magazine-style book 500 Faces – Volume One during Ropewalk Open Studio days in late September. Still on the lookout for 300 faces, Nigel explains, “so far people have come from a wide area to take part, including Manchester and London while visitors from Germany, France, St Lucia and Brasil have also taken part.”

In September he will launch the website www.500faces.online which will show the results so far, thereafter being updated every week.

To be included in this very special community contact Nigel at 500facesphoto@gmail.com and he will send full details for you.
