A taste of tradition
Known for its historic spa heritage and community spirit, Woodhall Spa is also a delightful destination for visitors seeking seasonal events and shopping this Christmas.
Always a popular place to visit, Woodhall Spa is a picturesque village with a wealth of history and old-time charm.
The village is surrounded by scenic woodlands and heathland, making it ideal for winter walks, nature and birdwatching, but it also attracts visitors for browsing and shopping in the many independent boutiques and businesses.
Although the popular outdoor evening Christmas Fair organised by the local Rotary Club (which previously ran for more than 25 years with up to 110 stalls drawing around 4,000 people) was cancelled last year due to mounting health and safety measures, the festive spirit in the village remains very much alive.
For shoppers in search of unique crafts and gifts, don’t miss this year’s indoor Christmas Fair, which takes place at the Coronation Hall on Saturday 13th December and is open from 10am to 3pm. This festive market featuring local artisans, with crafts, seasonal gifts, and delicious edible treats, is a great opportunity to experience local culture and support small businesses.
Foodies will also enjoy a visit to the fortnightly Country Market at St Peter’s Hall on The Broadway, which takes place on Fridays between 10am and 12noon (5th and 19th December). Tea, coffee and homemade cakes are served until 11.30am. Come along and take your pick of delicious preserves, bakes and crafts, plus homegrown seasonal veg, fruit and plants.
Woodhall Spa boasts a range of independent retailers, perfect for one-of-a-kind finds in homeware and lifestyle (Molly & Me and Pin Cushion Interiors), fashion (Peter Scott Shoes, SELF and Flemings), floral designs (Enchanted Bloom), gifts, books and crafts (Underwood Hall Antiques & Jewellery, The Book Fayre and Fairy Crafters), plus local, quality foods (Graham Fidling Traditional Butchers and The Bakery delicatessen).
There’s also plenty of places to stop for refreshments along the way with a selection of cafés and bars, several with outside seating, ideal for a spot of people watching.
If you’re planning an overnight stay or longer visit, there’s an abundance of holiday accommodation choices too, including hotels, guest houses and B&Bs to suit all budgets.
For luxurious self-catering options check for availability among the romantic lakeside treehouses at Treetop Hideaways and the luxury lodges and cabins at Bainland Lodge Retreats, which offers private hot tubs, a wellness and fitness suite, as well as an on-site restaurant, ideal for couples and family get-togethers.
HERITAGE AND HISTORY
Woodhall Spa’s history dates back to 1811 when a failed coal-mining attempt by John Parkinson accidentally revealed iodine-rich waters with healing properties, leading to the town’s development as a Victorian spa resort.
Over the following decades, the town grew with the construction of bathing facilities and hotels, attracting visitors seeking its health benefits.
During World War II, the Petwood Hotel served as the home for 617 Squadron, the famous Dambusters, and the town also hosted RAF Woodhall Spa, which launched raids on German dams. Its unique wartime history is celebrated at a number of locations in the village.
Located in the heart of Woodhall Spa, the Royal Square is a notable and historic focal point of the village, offering a picturesque space surrounded by traditional architecture and community landmarks. Many people come to sit quietly and reflect on those who lost their lives in World War II with the Dambusters Memorial forming a lasting reminder.
The memorial was erected in 1987 and stands on the site of the former Royal Hydro Hotel and Winter Gardens, which were destroyed in a Luftwaffe bombing raid in 1943. Shaped to depict a dam, the memorial features a slate slab which represents water flooding through a breach, upon which the Squadron’s crest and battle honours are engraved.
The most famous operation undertaken by 617 Squadron was the Dams Raid, which took place over the night of 16th-17th May 1943. The raid utilised Barnes Wallis’ bouncing bomb and was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar, the crew flying specially modified Lancaster bombers. The operation succeeded in breaching two dams, the Möhne and the Eder, both located in the Ruhr Valley, but at a cost of eight Lancasters, with 53 of the participating crew being killed and three becoming POWs.
The squadron also undertook many other raids through to the war’s end, losing a further 151 crew. All of those lost have their names engraved on the memorial in alphabetical order with no ranks detailed, but with individual decorations listed.
On 19th May 2013, a new memorial was dedicated to 617 Squadron at Royal Square.
The striking granite memorial is to commemorate the more than 30 squadron members who have lost their lives since World War II. The new memorial, which stands next to the existing Dambusters
Memorial, takes its design from the wing shapes of Vulcan and Tornado aircraft, both of which have served with 617 Squadron.
With such a distinguished history in military aviation, there are many historic places to visit in the area. As home of the Dambusters Squadron during the war, the Petwood Hotel, built in 1905 and known for its elegant Edwardian ambiance, beautifully landscaped gardens and ties to aviation history, has a special connection to many of those who served.
Steeped in history, it’s no surprise that the hotel has also been chosen as the setting for the British Women Pilots’ Association’s 70th AGM, and Festive Lunch and Awards Ceremony, which takes place on Sunday 7th December.
Whether you are looking for a festive lunch or afternoon tea, private party or a special three-night break over Christmas, this distinguished hotel hosts special themed events and celebrations throughout December. For more information visit www.petwood.co.uk
ICONIC CINEMA
Movie fans of all ages can enjoy classic films and holiday-themed screenings in the atmospheric 1920s cinema The Kinema in the Woods, which started life as a sports and entertainment pavilion dating from the late 19th century. The pavilion sat in the grounds of The Victoria Hotel, looking over tennis courts, croquet lawns and gardens, until the hotel burned down on Easter Sunday 1920, which led to the relationship between the hotel and the pavilion being severed.
In 1922, Sir Archibald and Lady Weigall purchased the Victoria Hotel ruins including the sports pavilion and, with the assistance of Captain Carleton Cole Allport, the pavilion was transformed into a cinema which opened its doors on Monday 11th September 1922 at 7pm. The first film to be shown was intended to be The Lion Eaters, however the film failed to arrive and a Charlie Chaplin film was shown in its place.
Due to the roof trusses in the building, which are too low for an image to be projected from the back of the auditorium, films in Screen One at The Kinema are projected from behind the screen and onto a mirror to flip the image. This is then shown on the back of the screen. The Kinema is believed to be the only full-time cinema in the UK still using rear projection.
Most of the auditorium (the current Screen One) was fitted with tip-up seats; however the front six rows were deck chairs. These seats were much sought after at 1s 6d (other seats ranged from 1s 3d to 6d).
The deck chairs remained in The Kinema until 1953.
The first sound projector was installed in The Kinema in 1928 and was replaced in 1978 by two electronically controlled projectors.
Major CC Allport ran the cinema for over 50 years, until 1973 when it was taken over by James Green, who also owned a cinema in Stone, Staffordshire and later owned and ran cinemas in Spilsby and Mablethorpe.
n June 1987, Mr Green installed a Compton Kinestra organ in The Kinema, which features an ornate lacquered red and gold console with an eighteenth century oriental design. The organ is still situated in Screen One and played regularly by The Kinema’s resident organist, Alan Underwood.
A 92-seat auditorium, Kinema Two, was opened on 8th July 1994 with a screening of Four Weddings and A Funeral. The auditorium walls of Screen Two depict scenes of rural Lincolnshire in trompe l’œil style painted by Canadian artist Murray Hubick.
In June 2019, a Third Auditorium was opened, with a screening of the film Yesterday to an invited audience, followed by Kinema 4, an intimate 21-seater auditorium in October 2021.
A Woodland Courtyard opened in summer 2022 where films are shown outdoors in the summer months.
All auditoriums feature state-of-the-art projection and sound technology.
The Kinema in the Woods remains a privately-owned family business and is open every day of the year except Christmas Day.
Screen One seats 160, Screen Two seats 92, Screen Three seats 74 and Screen Four seats 21.
All four auditoriums are available to hire for events, such as private parties with a screening of your choice of film, school bookings, organ shows and more.
The cinema is always a popular choice for family entertainment so reserving seats is advised.
This festive season sees a selection of favourite classics, including Polar Express (7th to 24th December), It’s A Wonderful Life (16th to 23rd December), White Christmas (18th to 21st December) André Rieu’s 2025 Christmas Concert (7th to 10th December), British Opera and Ballet’s The Nutcracker (10th to 15th December) and the New Year’s Eve Concert from the Berlin Philharmonic (31st December).

EMBRACING LIVE-IN CARE
When the time comes to arrange care for a loved one, families are often faced with difficult choices.
While care homes are a common option, live-in care offers a compassionate alternative that allows people to remain in the comfort of their own home.
Surrounded by familiar belongings, routines and even pets, individuals benefit from a sense of continuity and security that can be especially reassuring for those living with dementia or long-term health conditions.
At the heart of live-in care is tailored, one-to-one support. A dedicated carer not only assists with daily needs such as personal care, meals and medication but also provides companionship and encouragement.
This personalised approach means care is built around the individual’s lifestyle and preferences, helping to preserve independence, dignity and emotional wellbeing. Families also gain peace of mind, relieved of the daily strain of caregiving and able to focus instead on quality time and meaningful moments with their loved one.
Live-in care is often a practical choice as well as a personal one. Research from the Live-In Care Hub shows people receiving care at home are healthier, happier and even financially better off than those in residential care.
Risks such as falls or hospital admissions are reduced, and care plans can adapt flexibly as needs change. For many families, it is a solution that combines comfort, connection and security, while ensuring loved ones can continue to live life in the place they know best – home.
