All go in Gainsborough
Mike Cowton takes a look around one of the largest market towns in the county, where new developments complement a wealth of historic sights.
The market town of Gainsborough is brimming with history. Coupled with a lively events programme, there is much to enjoy here. Families can step back in time at Gainsborough Old Hall, explore local history and exhibitions at the Gainsborough Heritage Centre, enjoy arts and culture at the Trinity Arts Centre and the newly opened cinema.
The historic marketplace hosts a twice-weekly market (Tuesdays and Saturdays) and a monthly themed Farmers’ and Craft Market held on the second Saturday of the month (February will be focused on Valentine’s and March on Mother’s Day gifts and treats). Around the town there are also a range of independent shops to explore and Marshall’s Yard retail centre remains a major attraction for both locals and visitors from further afield.
Summer 2025 marked some significant milestones for Gainsborough’s town centre with the opening of the new four-screen Savoy Cnema; the repurposing of a derelict building on the historic riverside into the new Café Walton; the creation of a new high-quality green space at Baltic Mill offering a peaceful spot to enjoy the riverside, along with restored historic shopfronts and an improved market place. Residents are rightly proud of what has been achieved. This year promises to be as exciting, with plenty of upcoming events, tempting eateries to try and places to visit that will appeal to all ages.
A WALK THROUGH TIME
The town’s Heritage Trail, a 90-minute walk through the history of the ancient market town, includes nods to Gainsborough’s brief spell as the capital of England and some of its famous sons and daughters. The trail also includes Gainsborough Old Hall, one of England’s best-preserved medieval manor houses (open to visitors throughout the year). Along the scenic self-led walk, you will discover plenty of captivating facts and stories that help bring the past to life.
The flat, circular walk is suitable for pushchairs, and those with limited mobility. There is seating along the route too. It begins at the Gainsborough Heritage Centre, and landmarks passed include the Old Nick Theatre, Marshall’s Yard, and the Old County Court House.
There are plenty of places to stop off to refuel, rest and enjoy local food and drink. Public toilets are available at the centre of the walk, in the Roseway car park (DN21 2HP).
Hard copies of the Heritage Trail booklet are available at Gainsborough Library, or you can email your request to tourism.info@west-lindsey.gov.uk to receive a copy in the post.
PILGRIMS’ STORY
On your visit, why not find out more about Gainsborough’s Pilgrim roots and its connection with the Mayflower? A group of Separatists were thought to have worshipped in secret at Gainsborough Old Hall, with the permission of its sympathetic owner, merchant William Hickman.
The United Reformed Church also stands as a memorial to John Robinson, pastor of the Mayflower Pilgrims. Robinson was one of the leaders in the planning of the voyage to America.
Inside the church you can visit the ‘Mayflower Room’, which houses a display of the local history of the area’s Separatist ancestors.
Visit the website and contact before visiting (www.gainsborough-united-reformed-church.org.uk). The Pilgrim Woman, a bronze statue located on the water’s edge, is a legacy to the often-unheard stories of the women who travelled to America on the Mayflower. She is a symbol of growth and new beginnings as she prepares to leave her home to travel to America onboard the Mayflower.
WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
Many of the eateries in the town champion local produce, so you can expect both freshness and flavour.
Nestled in the heart of Whittons Gardens you will find the recently opened Café Walton, one of Gainsborough’s latest spots for speciality coffee, artisan bakes, and relaxed vibes. Located on the picturesque riverside, the café, which opens daily from 7.30am to 4pm, was transformed from a derelict public building as part of the wider town centre regeneration scheme and is already proving to be a popular riverside spot.
The mosaic installed on the outside of the building celebrating King Canute was designed and co-produced by Mary Mary Mosaics alongside the people of Gainsborough.
Inspired by a 12th-century tale, the mosaic portrays the legendary moment King Canute attempted to halt the tide. Many believe this symbolic act took place in Gainsborough, utilising the Aegir tidal bore on the River Trent. Further along the riverside you will find the recently opened Baltic Mill park.
Other eateries and shops found along the riverside and neighbouring Lord Street include Reeds, a charming coffee shop, and Clockhouse Gastrobar, a real neighbourhood gem.
Caldero Lounge lies in the heart of Marshall’s Yard retail park. It is impossible to miss its bright green doors and inside visitors are welcomed by a light and airy atrium space, with clouds of tasselled lampshades, paintings, and an impressive dark wood-panelled bar. The site once housed a factory for the manufacture of Marshall’s steam and traction engines, tractors and steam boilers.
Caldero Lounge is at Unit 3, Marshall’s Yard, and is open Sundays to Thursdays, from 9am to 10pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 11pm.
At Hickman Hill Hotel, every dish tells a story of passion and flavour. Nestled in the heart of the town, the hotel’s restaurant offers a haven for food enthusiasts where the kitchen creates each dish using the finest ingredients.
LIGHTING UP GAINSBOROUGH
Gainsborough’s fantastic annual Illuminate event will return on Saturday 21st February with its popular lantern parade, mesmerising light displays, fire garden and more. This year’s theme is ‘Through the Window’, inspired by the architecture of the town’s iconic buildings.
Here’s what to expect:
- 6pm: Illuminate Lantern Parade departing from Lord Street, led by a lively Samba band.
- 6pm-8pm: ‘Through the Window’ Exhibition at Gainsborough Old Hall (inside and outside), including a projection on to the iconic historic building.
- 6:30pm-8pm: Fire Garden at All Saints’ Parish Church. Expect mesmerising fire sculptures and performers within the grounds and a stunning display of lanterns inside.

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!
Trinity Arts Centre offers a wide mix of live theatre, comedy, music and film. It has a welcoming bar available pre-performance and an eclectic programme. This historic site, formerly Holy Trinity Church, is a real gem within the heart of Gainsborough. January’s offering includes a screening of the National Theatre Live – Hamlet, live music from Voodoo Room with Abba Sensation and The Rod Stewart Songbook following later in the month. You can enjoy hits from the 1960s and 70s with tribute act The Jerseys (13th February); Sting and The Police Tribute (The Rozzers) on 14th February; and contemporary folk with Lisa Knapp and Gerry Diver on 15th February. View the full programme at www.trinityarts.co.uk/whats-on
Another historic venue located within the town centre is Kings Theatre. Originally built in the early 1800s as a playhouse, the theatre has been restored, bringing it back into use as an entertainment venue, and today is used for plays, bingo, music, comedy, and many forms of theatrical entertainment.
Fittingly, the theatre will welcome the King in April. No, not that King, the other one: an Elvis tribute night. Tickets are £12. Doors open at 7pm with curtains up at 8pm.
And, of course, there is also now the new four-screen Savoy Cinema offering the latest blockbusters, a silver screen club and kids club screenings.

CAFÉ WALTON OFFERS A WARM WELCOME
When Garry Walton speaks about Café Walton, it’s clear this isn’t just a business venture, it’s a return to his roots.
Raised in Gainsborough, educated locally, and starting his working life there, Garry has an instinctive understanding of the town’s character, values, and needs.
Opened in September 2025, Café Walton is as much about community as it is about coffee.
Nestled by the river in Whittons Gardens, the café which is the new go-to spot for speciality coffee and artisan bakes is designed to be welcoming, relaxing and unpretentious.
A space for dog walkers, cyclists, families and friends to pause, connect and feel at home.
Community sits at the heart of Café Walton’s ethos. From supporting local suppliers to creating a space where everyone feels welcome, the café has quickly become a gathering point, where visitors discover a quieter side of Gainsborough that often surprises them.
Café Walton isn’t trying to be flashy or follow trends. Instead, it focuses on quality, consistency and warmth. Garry believes that his personal investment in the town, combined with his vision for Café Walton, will help contribute to the town’s transformation by creating a welcoming space that reflects both its history and evolving identity.

SAFEGUARDING THE VISION OF FUTURE GENERATIONS
Myopia, or short-sightedness, is a common vision condition that affects millions worldwide, particularly children and adolescents. The importance of myopia management cannot be overstated, as the prevalence of this condition is increasing at an alarming rate. Effective management strategies are crucial to prevent the progression of myopia, which can lead to severe eye health issues later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts.
Owner of Walters Opticians, Roy Walters FBDO SMC tech says: “Regular eye exams can help detect myopia early. Options such as myopia management MySight contact lenses, as well as the Essilor Stellest spectacle lenses, are both available on payment plans at Walters Opticians. Additionally, promoting outdoor activities and reducing screen time can also contribute to better eye health.
“By prioritising myopia management, we can safeguard the vision of future generations, ensuring they maintain a high quality of life and reducing the risk of complications associated with advanced myopia.”

NEW SITE FOR ANIMAL RESCUE CHARITY
Rain is a local animal rescue charity founded in 2002 to help as many dogs in need as possible, registering as a charity in 2006.
Today the Rotherham site has kennels and a cattery taking in dogs and cats that need rehoming from the local area.
They also have an onsite vet suite to support Rain animals when they come into the charity and to support them through their rehoming journey.
2026 is going to be an exciting year for Rain with the purchase of a new site in Misson, Doncaster, allowing the charity to extend its reach and help more animals and owners in need.
“The site will allow us to double capacity and will be open to the public with an onsite café and shop, allowing Rain to bring in much needed revenue into the charity.
“We will also be extending our current vet and behavioural capacity to help more pets and owners wherever possible, and extending our community programmes giving help and advice where necessary.”
How you can help – sponsor a cat pod or kennel, make a monthly donation, take on a challenge, volunteer with Rain or organise a corporate day through your workplace.
Every little bit helps.

READY FOR SPRING – WITH RIX K9 FUELS
Winter may still have its grip across Lincolnshire, but there are welcome signs that spring is slowly on its way. The days are stretching out, bulbs in the garden are beginning to appear, yet cold mornings and frosty evenings can still catch us out. It’s a season of transition – where brighter days sit alongside the need to stay warm just a little longer.
Rix K9 Fuels have been helping homes across the county stay comfortable through every season for generations. This time of year is a sensible moment to check your heating oil levels and make sure your tank is topped up, giving you reassurance should winter decide to linger or return unexpectedly.
Keeping your tank well-stocked now can help you avoid last-minute orders, delivery pressures, and the inconvenience of running low when you still need the heating on. It’s also a good opportunity to give your oil tank a quick visual check, ensuring everything is in good condition as we move into the warmer months.
As part of their continued commitment to friendly, local service, Rix K9 Fuels are also pleased to introduce Simon Cullen, the newest member of the team.
Simon is on hand to help with orders, queries, and advice, and is always happy to offer support if you need to get in touch. If you need to place an order or have a question, Simon and the team can be contacted on 01427 679767.
Whether you’re a long-standing customer or new to Rix, you’ll find the same personal, reliable service for which they are known.
So, as you enjoy the first signs of spring – lighter evenings, fresh air, and time spent outdoors – take a moment to think ahead. A simple top-up now can help keep your home warm, comfortable, and ready for whatever the season brings.
