Every picture tells a story
Colin Smale looks back at the history of the award-winning Grimsby Photographic Society, which was founded in 1894.
For more than 130 years, Grimsby Photographic Society has been at the heart of Lincolnshire’s photographic community, inspiring generations of image-makers and enthusiasts.
In 2025, the Society added another proud chapter to its long history by winning the Lincolnshire Photographic Association (LPA) Battles final – an achievement that reflects not only strong photographic skill, but also the enduring spirit of teamwork and creativity that has defined the club since 1894.
The LPA Battles are one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the county’s photographic calendar.
Each year, clubs from across Lincolnshire come together to showcase their best work in a friendly yet highly competitive atmosphere.
Entries span a broad range of genres, including landscape, portraiture, monochrome, nature, architecture, and creative photography. Every image submitted is considered by independent, accredited judges, who score them on impact, technical merit, composition, and storytelling.
There are three rounds and scores are combined from all rounds to determine the contenders at the final.
The 2025 contest was particularly exciting. With several clubs submitting exceptionally strong work, the final was close throughout. But as the last scores were tallied, Grimsby Photographic Society emerged at the top with an impressive 260 points, securing first place and bringing the Battles Trophy back to Grimsby.
Cleethorpes Camera Club followed closely with 257 points, while Axholme Camera Club secured third place with 250 points. Scunthorpe, Lincoln, and Grantham completed the final standings.
Chairperson and secretary, Jo Humberstone expressed her delight at the result: “We’re thrilled with this year’s performance. Every member contributed something special, whether through their photography, critique, or encouragement. The strength of our Society is built on shared enthusiasm and support. To see that shine through in a county-wide competition such as this is incredibly rewarding.”
Rich heritage
The victory is significant not only for the competition itself, but also for what it represents about the Society’s continued growth and relevance.
Grimsby Photographic Society is recognised as “Lincolnshire’s oldest camera club” and one of the longest-established in the UK. Its longevity is no accident. Throughout its history, the club has adapted to the evolving world of photography – from glass plates and smelly darkrooms to today’s digital sensors and editing software – while maintaining its welcoming, community-driven atmosphere.
Weekly meetings are held most Thursdays at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church, Weelsby Road, Grimsby, offering a varied and engaging programme.
Members enjoy illustrated talks from guest speakers, practical evenings, studio sessions, workshops, themed competitions, critique nights, and opportunities to learn new techniques. The Society is open to all, from beginners with smartphones to advanced photographers with decades of experience.
Another cornerstone of Grimsby’s success is its emphasis on constructive feedback and mutual support. Members frequently remark that the Society’s welcoming approach helped them grow both technically and creatively.
Newcomers appreciate the friendly environment in which they can develop their confidence, while experienced photographers enjoy opportunities to mentor others and share knowledge gained over years of practice.
Several members have received recognition for their work from the prestigious Royal Photographic Society and one member’s image of a blue damselfly graces the dust cover of Sir David Attenborough’s book Life in the Undergrowth.
Beyond competitions, Grimsby Photographic Society remains active in the region through exhibitions, collaborative events, and contributions to the cultural life of North East Lincolnshire.
Members regularly have images accepted into regional and national exhibitions, including the North & East Midlands Photographic Federation (N&EMPF) Exhibition, where the Society continues to achieve commendations and acceptances across multiple categories.
Shared passion
Winning the 2025 LPA Battles Final highlights the Society’s strong position within the county. But more importantly, it reflects the continued enthusiasm of its members – people united not just by cameras and lenses, but by a shared passion for seeing and capturing the world in meaningful ways.
Jo Humberstone said: “Photography is constantly evolving, but the heart of our Society remains the same. We come together to learn, to create, and to celebrate the diversity of photographic expression.
“Our success in the LPA Battles shows what can be achieved when a community supports one another.”
The Society is now preparing for the next season of competitions and events, with plans to expand its workshop offerings and increase collaboration with neighbouring clubs.
With a growing membership and renewed momentum following their county win, the future continues to look bright for the Society.
Grimsby Photographic Society continues to prove that photography in Lincolnshire is thriving – and that a club founded in the 19th century can still lead the way in the 21st.
