Love Lincoln!

Known for its award-winning attractions, great shopping and places to eat and drink, Lincoln is also supporting its residential community with new housing projects. By Mike Cowton.

Brimming with history, Lincoln is one of the country’s finest cities. The imposing Cathedral, the third largest in England, is one of the high points of Gothic architecture. The West Front, with its Norman arches set in a 13th-century screen, is simply stunning. From the tip of the Cathedral to the depths of the Roman waterways, the city is full of fascinating stories just waiting to be discovered.

THE REGENERATION GAME
The city’s major new developments remain focussed on large-scale housing and regeneration, with the Charterholme (Western Growth Corridor) project off Skellingthorpe Road being a 25-year development, planned to deliver 3,200 homes, a business park, shops and community facilities.

This project sits alongside significant council house building like the upcoming Jasmin Green. This new development in Birchwood will offer 50 affordable council homes, with construction expected to start this spring for an autumn 2027 completion. The Towns Fund – a £3.6 billion fund investing in towns as part of the Government’s plan to level up the country’s regions – also supports regeneration, including upgrades to the Cornhill Quarter, where Phase 2 works have enhanced public spaces, improving connectivity to the Transport Hub and High Street, and the Sincil Bank area, where regeneration focuses on sustainable transport, green spaces and environmental improvements.

BEST FOOT FORWARD
Start your day with a coffee in the stylish, uphill Cornhill Quarter where you can visit the Cathedral and Lincoln Castle, before walking down Steep Hill – as the name suggests, a steep, cobbled street connecting the historic Cathedral Quarter to the lower commercial area. Don’t miss the ‘Crooked House’ situated at the top of Michaelgate and very possibly one of the most photographed buildings in Lincoln.

After indulging in some retail therapy along High Street, take a stroll along Brayford Waterfront, England’s oldest inland harbour which was once was a bustling port.

No longer surrounded by mills, breweries and engine sheds, today you will discover stylish restaurants and internationally renowned hotels.

Follow the Brayford Architecture Trail, with information boards located at the entrance to Lucy Tower Street car park, in front of The Shed on the university campus, and along the waterfront.

The trail presents 12 buildings that reference the medieval, Victorian, industrial, modern and postmodern periods of architectural history, displaying the Brayford as an important centre of Lincoln that is in constant flux.

As you explore, look out for the Brayford Chimes. Designed by Andy Plant, this artwork reflects the past glories of the Brayford Pool as a major inland port. It includes a water feature and a clock, which has been designed to chime each hour using the water running through it.

FULL STEAM AHEAD
Always a popular attraction, this year’s Asylum Steampunk Festival coincides with the August Bank Holiday weekend. Steampunk is a retro-futuristic subgenre of science fiction and a vibrant subculture blending Victorian-era aesthetics with advanced, steam-powered technology, expressing creativity through fashion, art and music.

The world’s largest steampunk event is held in Lincoln’s Historic Quarter, where you can expect thousands of costumed attendees, live music, art, workshops, parades, teapot racing and steampunk markets.

STEP BACK IN TIME
The Lincoln Festival of History takes place during May Bank Holiday weekend and is your chance to explore the city from a new perspective as the history is brought to life like never before. Look forward to historic re-enactments, Viking combat, Medieval knights, Victorian shows, classic cars, hands-on activities such as coin minting, and themed events at various locations, including Lincoln Castle, St Paul in the Bail, Cornhill Square and the Cathedral.

Lincoln’s 1940s Weekend will be staged in the historic Bailgate and Cathedral Quarter from 19th to 20th July.

Expect an immersive display of unique stalls, stands, authentic 1940s memorabilia, and thousands of visitors, many dressed in authentic period attire. There will be live music and dance performances, plus vintage fairground attractions including a traditional carousel and children’s swing boats.

Classic vehicle displays will showcase military and civilian vehicles. Visitors also can find traditional games and activities, craft markets and vintage stalls, pop-up street theatre and living history demonstrations, plus special appearances from Derek Herbert’s brilliant portrayal of Winston Churchill.

Prizes will be awarded for best-dressed visitors and businesses.

Another prominent event, The Salute to the 40s, will be held at the International Bomber Command Centre from 8th to 9th August, focusing on aviation heritage with living history and displays. This immersive weekend event features tea and cake served on vintage crockery in a marquee setting while guests enjoy 1940s entertainment, authentic re-enactors in period costume, and vintage trade stands selling stylish period items.

Vehicle enthusiasts can admire an impressive selection of 1940s cars and military vehicles, while educational elements include talks on bomb disposal and mission briefings, with the RAF Hawksmere Bomber Command Group providing insight into Bomber Command’s humanitarian missions.

The weekend includes special entertainment such as Glen Miller concerts, children’s activities and additional ticketed events including cabaret shows and period dances.

MUSICAL NOTES
Join the Band of the Royal Air Force College at Lincoln Cathedral on 16th May and celebrate the iconic music of legendary composer John Williams. From the epic themes of Star Wars and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to stirring compositions written for historic moments, the concert promises a journey through some of the most powerful and recognisable scores ever written. The special charity event will be hosted by Melvyn Prior.

Pioneering duo OMD will bring their acclaimed Summer of Hits Tour to Lincoln Castle on Thursday 11th June. OMD’s live shows are packed with energy, nostalgia and synth-driven tunes, promising a night of dancing and timeless hits. Joining OMD will be Peter Hook & The Light, a powerhouse post-punk band fronted by Joy Division and New Order co-founder Peter Hook. Opening the show will be rising star Andrew Cushin.

Legendary singer-songwriter Paul Weller will take to the stage at Lincoln Castle on Saturday 13th June, promising a night of timeless songs and unforgettable energy. Over the course of a career which extends five decades, Paul Weller’s songs have been woven into the tapestry of British music.

COFFEE AND CUISINE
This spring the popular Japanese-inspired Cognito UK is relocating from 10 Park Street for a new day-to-night experience at the Pyewipe Inn, situated a 30-minute stroll from the Brayford Pool along Britain’s oldest manmade waterway.

The restaurant is renowned for its Japanese and British bar/restaurant with lunch, dinner and rooftop cocktail offerings.

Popeyes, the famous chicken chain, recently opened at 297 High Street, bringing its signature authentic New Orleans flavours to Lincoln. The famous Louisiana chicken sandwich comprises a chicken fillet marinated in Louisiana seasonings, hand-battered, fried for a signature shatter crunch, and served on a toasted brioche bun with crisp barrel-cured pickles and mayo (classic or spicy). When in Lincoln, eat like a Louisianan!

Katie O’Brien’s is Lincoln’s newest Irish tavern, situated at the former TGI Friday’s site at 238 High Street. It is part of a new chain of Irish pubs, with the Lincoln site marking its 10th location. The venue plans to bring an authentic Irish pub back to the city, with live music and traditional stouts.

Coffee Culture Bailgate is a modern, sophisticated independent coffee shop offering deli sandwiches and wraps; a local bakery is used for the bread and all the pastries, in addition to their homemade cookies and banana bread. The establishment combines rustic charm and chic sophistication with its earthy tones and wooden furniture, exuding a cosy, lived-in feel.

Madame Waffle, at 285 High Street, specialises in serving fresh Belgian waffles with a variety of sweet and savoury toppings. The waffles are available in plain and free from gluten and vegan options. Spread over three floors, the decor is not dissimilar to a spruced-up Victorian house, with a retro ambience and bold colours.

As Lincolnshire’s longest trading manufacturers and installers of double glazed uPVC products and quality conservatories, Cliffside Windows has established its reputation over the past 50 years as a trusted local business.

Through our unique, specialist experience we have identified the products our customers want – high performance, low maintenance, long-lasting and affordable uPVC windows and doors.

If you’re considering adding a stylish living space, we offer a variety of quality made to measure conservatories in a range of styles designed for year round use.

LEKA systems
The industry leader in lightweight, tiled conservatory roof solutions offering a comfortable, year-round living space, we are the main stockist of the revolutionary LEKA Systems.

LEKA products were originally designed as a replacement conservatory roof system and proved the perfect solution to refurbishing inefficient conservatories that are cold in winter and too hot in summer.

Unlike traditional roofs, the LEKA System is nearly half the weight of glass roofs and delivers better insulation.

While other lightweight roofs are made from aluminium and timber which makes them heavy, the Lightweight LEKA systems are made from a Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) structural framework.

The JHAI-approved roof systems offer superior energy efficiency, boasting U-values as low as 0.12, making them a market standout.

Classic styles
Cliffside installs a range of conservatories, offering our customers in Lincolnshire the latest styles and designs of high-performance products. Give your home a new look with a classic conservatory and choose from Victorian or Edwardian styles, or explore our range of sun lounge conservatories and Orangeries.

From stylish windows and secure doors to stunning conservatories and more, we can help bring your vision to life. We handle the process from day one, designing your conservatory to seeing out the whole project, managing brickwork, installation of the frames and roof, plastering etc. Our installations all come with an insurance backed guarantee.

We also supply and install for commercial projects, such as fitting new windows in schools and council buildings, in every sort of building across Lincolnshire.

Our professional fitters work efficiently to install your new uPVC double glazing or roofline products, and you can be sure that you’ll only be more impressed with the final result.

Whatever home improvement product you choose to explore, our friendly and helpful on-site expert team are always happy to help guide you to make the perfect choice.

PERFECT PRUNING ADVICE FROM FULLERS
March is a key month for rose and shrub care. As winter fades and plants begin to awaken, this short window offers ideal conditions for pruning and shaping before new growth takes off.

Pruning too early risks frost damage, while leaving it too late means cutting into fresh shoots – March provides the perfect balance.

For Hybrid Teas and Floribundas, remove dead or crossing stems, and then cut remaining growth to outward-facing buds to create an open, vase-like shape.

Shrub and English roses need only light pruning and climbing roses benefit from tying new stems horizontally, removing congested old growth, and shortening side shoots to two or three buds.

Shrubs flowering on new wood – buddleia, hardy fuchsia, caryopteris – should be pruned hard now. Cut dogwood and willow to low buds for strong winter stems.

Avoid pruning spring-flowering shrubs until after they bloom. Check for winter damage and early pests as you go.

Thoughtful March care sets your roses and shrubs up for a healthier, more colourful summer.

WHY COMPREHENSIVE EYE CARE MATTERS
At David Burghardt Vision Care, comprehensive eyecare is about far more than simply updating your glasses or contact lenses prescription.

Regular eye examinations play a vital role in protecting not only your vision, but your overall health. Many serious eye conditions – such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease – can develop silently, without obvious symptoms in the early stages. A thorough eye exam can detect these issues early, when treatment is most effective.

Modern eye care goes well beyond a standard sight test. Advanced imaging technologies like OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) allow eye care professionals to see detailed cross-sectional images of the retina, helping to identify subtle changes that may indicate eye or neurological conditions. Optomap widefield imaging provides a detailed view of the retina without the need for dilation, making it easier to spot early signs of disease.

Comprehensive eye care also includes tailored vision options such as glasses and contact lenses designed specifically to suit your lifestyle and visual demands. In addition, David Burghardt Vision Care offers treatments that improve comfort and eye health, including light therapy for dry eye disease, which targets the root causes rather than just the symptoms.

“At David Burghardt Vision Care, we’ve proudly been your local eye care experts for over 40 years, delivering comprehensive eye care and continually enhancing the care we provide through the latest advances in eye health and technology.”
