Newark – a town rich in history

The bustling market town on the Trent offers a delightful mix of culture and riverside tranquillity, says Glynis Fox.

Some towns have much more going for them than others – and Newark is certainly fortunate to be one of them!

This popular destination ticks plenty of boxes when it comes to its location and services. It is close to the A1, enjoys a direct rail link to London, has a fascinating history, colourful markets and boasts a good mix of independent and national-brand shops and events.

A strategically important stronghold during the English Civil War and sited at a crucial crossing point on the River Trent (often called the ‘Key to the North’), its Royalist garrison was secured by the Duke of Newcastle in 1642 and it also provided a refuge for the King. Newark faced three sieges by Parliamentarian forces – in 1643, 1644 and 1645-46, the last of which was prolonged and arduous. On 26th November 1645, Scottish and Parliamentarian troops launched a twin attack on the town, with the Scots besieging Newark from the north and the Parliamentarian forces besieging the town from the south.

The garrison refused to capitulate and aggressively defended the town, but finally surrendered in May 1646, after the surrender of King Charles I himself.

However, this was not just a major blow to the Royalist cause, by this time the town’s people were suffering significant hardship from the impact of disease and shortages of food.

The scars of the conflict are still visible in parts of the town – at Newark Castle, which still has blackened stonework from gunpowder used in an attempt to destroy or slight the monument; at the scheduled earthwork fort Queen’s Sconce in Sconce and Devon Park; and, of course, through artefacts now in the town’s National Civil War Museum in Appletongate.

The Museum features interesting permanent galleries, complementary exhibitions, talks, school holiday fun and more.

Newark also has a walkable Civil War Trail and visitors can enjoy looking around the extensive remains of Newark Castle, its curtain walls, 12th-century gatehouse, towers and well-kept gardens, which overlook the important River Trent.

Along with friends or family you might like to experience one or more of the following alternative Saturday town tours, which start at 1.30pm: Newark Through Time on 2nd, 16th or 30th August; Besieged But Never Beaten on 9th or 23rd August. Book your place by visiting: www.palacenewark.com

SHOPS AND MARKETS
With its interesting little alleys and lively marketplace, Newark is easy to walk around if you love shopping, but stores are spread out over a fairly wide area, so give yourself lots of time.

Middlegate is the place to find a mix of national brand and independent shops, including the footwear outlet Vix. You can also pop into the Tambo Lounge for refreshments. This eatery occupies part of the town’s historic Victorian Buttermarket.

Step off Middlegate into Chain Lane, an alley which boasts several Grade II-listed buildings and leads through to the town’s Market Place. Chain Lane is the place to find Jane Young’s two popular ladies fashion outlets, Hobson Shoes and – for art lovers – a branch of Trent Galleries.

Newark Royal Market is another must for visitors. Its general market takes place on Wednesdays and there are collectors’ markets on Mondays and Thursdays.

In Stodman Street, work on the former Marks & Spencer site, which is being redeveloped into a mixed-use space, featuring 29 residential homes and new shop units, is now expected to be finished in 2026.

Last summer, work at the site was paused following the unearthing of amazing archaeological finds, including a horse burial and interesting artefacts.

Stodman Street is where you will find a variety of businesses from the branches of major nationals, such as Boots, to the historic Prince Rupert pub, other eateries and charity shops.

One of its notable names is the jeweller and watch specialist Andrew Michael’s. Make sure you take a look in this business’ windows – it’s the real deal when it comes to finding that very special gift!

It really is best to park up and give yourself plenty of time to discover the sheer variety of shops and services on offer in the town. You are likely to be pleasantly surprised.

There are also many major retailers based in large units on edge of town sites too which, naturally, offer very convenient parking.

Newark Northgate Retail Park gets really busy with shoppers rushing into its big-name retailers including TK Maxx, Pets at Home, Currys/PC World and many more, plus there’s the opportunity to take time out in the coffee shop situated in The Maltings itself!

The Maltings Retail Park, in Northgate, is much nearer to Newark Town Centre, more compact and well-maintained. This is where you will find M&S’s expansive food outlet. It is also easy to be tempted to meet friends in the onsite Costa or simply reward yourself with a tasty bite from Greggs.

WHAT’S ON
Looking for entertainment in Newark? Then you should check what’s on at the Palace Theatre in Appletongate and the five-screen Odeon Cinema in London Road.

There are numerous events taking place at Newark Showground too – only a mile-and-a-half from Newark.

August’s diary dates include:

  • 3rd August – The Great British Land Rover Show: Join the Land Rover community in the showground’s George Stephenson Hall and surrounding fields. Look out for parts, accessories, adventure travel and merchandise
  • 3rd August – Newark Arms, Medals and Militaria Fair: You could find some great collectibles from the English Civil War and other conflicts here
  • 10th August – ’Normous Newark Car and Motorcycle Autojumble: Find a vast array of parts, restoration services and products

  • 24th August – The Great British Koi Show: See some of the best Koi in the country and top Koi dealers too, plus remember to take a look at the artisan craft stands.
Newark Showground is also the place to find markets on Mondays (except on Bank Holidays), Wednesday and Thursdays. These offer visitors a terrific opportunity to pick up interesting collectibles and antiques, as well as general retail items.
Newark is also well known for the six annual antiques fairs held at the Newark County Showground.

NEWARK-ON-SEA RETURNS!

From Saturday 2nd August to Sunday 17th August, the historic market place will be transformed into an urban beach, which is free of charge and open every day from 10am to 4pm.

This year, the event is joining forces with the Festival of Food, which Newark & Sherwood District Council is organising. Visitors can enjoy a massive programme of daily activities, including cooking demonstrations, children’s picnics, entertainment, and sand sculptures.

Last year, more than 3,000 adults and children attended the ‘beach’, bringing a hive of activity to Newark town centre.

Matthew Gleadell, town clerk of Newark Town Council, said: “Events always help to add a real buzz and atmosphere to Newark, especially in the town centre. The town council is particularly pleased that it has been able to ensure that Newark-on-Sea will continue as an event that has been enjoyed for the last two years.

“We have received so many words of appreciation over the years for putting on the event, and we can’t wait to see the children enjoying the feature.

“We are lucky to enjoy such a busy events programme in Newark, and if regular events at the showground are also taken into account, we truly have a wide variety of events and entertainment on our doorstep that should provide something for all tastes and interests.”

ROLL UP FOR EVERYWHERE’S A BEACH!
Enjoy a day at the beach unlike any other this summer as Hikapee brings its high-energy, circus theatre show to Newark!

Hikapee has been creating and touring outdoor shows since 2016, to festivals including Brighton Festival, Out There Festival, Latitude, Arts by the Sea, SIRF, SO Festival and many more.

Perfect for the whole family, Everywhere’s a Beach is a fun, energetic performance spectacle which takes place on a giant revolving beach parasol!

Everywhere’s a Beach is free to attend and will be taking place on 17th August during the final day of Newark-on-Sea, with performances at both 12noon and 2pm in Newark Market Place.

Expect a dynamic, dizzying and downright daft show that will leave you dancing with delight! You’ll be swept away as this show embraces everything we love about the beach. The spinning parasol creates the perfect setting for the eccentric beach-loving characters. Watch as their world collides with yours, as sophistication turns to chaos in this aerial circus performance.

The production explores the artistic collaboration of theatrical narrative and highly-skilled circus technique, developed specifically for the outdoors and for all ages. Hikapee’s custom-made spinning parasol supports a dynamic aerial circus performance.

All of the music within the show has been developed by Hikapee’s own composer, creating a completely original soundtrack that supports the physical action and narrative of the piece.

Everywhere’s a Beach is brought to you by Newark Creates, supported by Newark Heart through the Newark Towns Fund, as well as the Arts Council England.

LOVE YOUR SKIN WITH GROWN ALCHEMIST
Barbara Young discovers the benefits of a day spent at Eden Hall, a sanctuary for relaxation which is offering special summer skincare treatments from this innovative all natural beauty brand.

Created in 2008 by two Australian brothers, Jeremy and Keston Muijs, the “cutting edge” Grown Alchemist brand is renowned for its scientifically-innovative skincare for both face and body.

A proud partner of Eden Hall’s award-winning destination spa since 2022, Grown Alchemist has long proved a favourite in providing guests worldwide with an exclusive selection of top quality skincare treatments.

This summer, the Eden Hall Grown Alchemist Spa Garden Takeover (which runs until 30th September) sees an exclusive pop-up treatment area in the Spa Garden, offering guests express facial and eye treatments, along with a limited-edition Grown Alchemist cocktail menu inspired by ingredients in their skincare formulas.

The brand’s products are formulated to be natural, recyclable, cruelty-free, as well as aesthetically pleasing. Made with natural ingredients, vitamins and antioxidants, the range emphasises the interaction between science, nature and creativity with the aim to unlock every individual’s skin potential.

Designed for “all skin types affected by modern living”, Eden Hall guests are invited to choose from an exclusive range of treatments including Cryo Eye Lift: Revive + Define, a revitalising eye treatment which combines lymphatic drainage and ice-cold cryotherapy rollers to de-puff, hydrate and smooth fine lines and wrinkles, formulated to leave your eyes feeling refreshed with a wide awake feeling.

Alternatively, you can choose facials which include the rejuvenating Face Sculpt + Soothe, a soothing scalp massage, or the 24-hour Face Lift + Shield, combining expert cupping techniques and ice-cold cryotherapy rollers to awaken your lymphatic system, leaving your complexion instantly defined and refreshed.

All treatments are 25 minutes and priced at £30, bookable via Eden Hall reception on the day of your visit.

I was looking forward to experiencing the 60-minute Grown Alchemist Regenerator Facial (£110), which promised a combination of tension releasing motions, facial cupping and cryotherapy for instant firming results and was super happy with the results!

The treatment rooms upstairs are all designed with guest comfort in mind, with heated couches, peaceful ambience and friendly, well trained, friendly therapists who explain every step.

The treatment is tailored to meet individual skin concerns, such as uneven tone and texture, fine lines and wrinkles, and I could certainly see that my skin had a real glow afterwards, and even the next day looked and felt rejuvenated.

Grown Alchemist products (which are also on sale in the spa boutique) all felt very light, so my skin didn’t feel weighed down or greasy afterwards – just revitalised, re-energised and radiant.

DAY SPA EXPERIENCE
With its state-of-the-art facilities, blissful therapies and treatments, range of free classes and excellent hospitality, a spa day at Eden Hall always feels like a real treat.

Begin your day with a stop-off at the light and airy Vinery Restaurant, which serves a delicious choice of breakfast dishes and smoothies. Then it’s time to make the most of the sumptuous spa facilities which have been recently upgraded to include a heated outdoor pool with powerful jets to help soothe aching muscles, as well as an additional sauna and calm room.

You can also choose to take part in various classes on the activity timetable such as yoga, ballet or meditation, which proved wonderfully relaxing.

From rejuvenating saunas to the energising outdoor hot tubs, relaxation rooms and choice of relaxing thermal “experiences” including my two favourites, a herbal caldarium, and rose scented steam room, every guest space has been thoughtfully designed to help you switch off and make the most of your day.

And when you feel the need to refuel after a “busy” morning relaxing, you can take a gentle stroll upstairs in your fluffy white dressing gown (provided together with towels in your private locker) and enjoy a delicious three-course lunch in the Taste of Eden restaurant overlooking the stunning grounds. Everyone deserves a bit of “me time” and Eden Hall delivers on every occasion.
