There’s more to explore in 2026

Brigg continues to be a busy hub for the community and surrounding area with markets and events showcasing the best of the market town.

The market charter dates back to 1205 when King John gave Brigg the right to hold a weekly market and annual fair. For centuries these included livestock markets and a horse fair is still held in August. The Market Place, which links with the main shopping streets, hosts a busy schedule of themed markets. Shoppers can park for free all day Saturday at the Angel car park and Old Courts car park, which are both a few minutes’ walk to the Market Place.

BROWSE AND BUY
Whichever weekend you choose to visit, there is a market to give plenty of temptation. Brigg Flea Market is held on the first Saturday of every month, selling recycled and renewed secondhand items. The following Saturday sees stallholders on the Brigg Arts and Craft market setting up their stands. They are filled with beautiful handmade items, from furniture and jewellery, to décor and artworks. The third Saturday of the month welcomes the Brigg Lifestyle Market with plenty of choice of items for everyday life. The monthly cycle is completed by the Brigg Farmers’ Market.

This award-winning Farmers’ Market is held on the fourth Saturday of every month from 8am and attracts visitors from far and wide to sample the best of what North Lincolnshire has to offer. Locally reared meats are available in the form of sausages, joints, steaks, burgers, sausage rolls and homemade pies. There are also Lincolnshire cheeses, traditional jams and chutneys and a wide selection of cakes and sweets as well as international cuisines. Visitors will find plenty of tasty treats.

ARTS AND CULTURE
Brigg Live Arts, which was established in 2005, is managed by a team of local volunteers who put together and manage a programme of events throughout the year. You can find more details on their website: www.brigglivearts.org but highlights for this year already include The Coleby Plough Jag (3rd January), Rosianna Ceilidh Band (coming up in Feb), Illyria Theatre Company – As You Like It (17th July).

Nick and Mel Webb at The Rabbit Hole, a popular independent bookshop, host a number of local events throughout the year which are updated regularly on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/therabbitsbrigg. These include the No Limits Festival, which will take place in September at Normanby Hall.

The Brigg Community Hub hosts a number of family events, talks and group sessions within the library throughout the year. More details will follow early in the New Year on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/northlincolnshirelibraries

The venue underwent some changes last year and reopened in September. This brighter and more welcoming space saw the children’s library moved downstairs, offering much easier access for pushchairs and little ones. The Community Hub is located in The Angel, alongside The Market Place, so right in the heart of the town. Upstairs there is now a new adult reading room and study area – a quiet place to relax, read or study. The work has also included creating a new open plan library entrance, installing a community kitchen and training room, private meeting, activity and community rooms, open access computers and an interactive games table. The library is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12 noon.

The Angel still remains the home of Brigg Town Council on the top floor, Brigg Heritage Centre on the first floor and The Courtyard Café on the ground floor.

For a wider view of what is happening looking ahead to spring and summer across the area, the Visit North Lincolnshire website will have all the latest updates. This new version of the site was launched last summer. Visitors and local communities will be able to search for local events on the new ‘Whats On’ listings page: Go to visitnorthlincolnshire.com/events

NEW WOODLAND TO BE CREATED
Forestry England has bought about 2,380 acres of land and plans to create four new woodlands in North Lincolnshire, one of which will be at Pye House Farm, Cadney, just south of Brigg. The other sites are North Carlton, Newball and Mickleholme, on which it intends to plant trees and shrubs.

The land which has been purchased is lower quality agricultural land and the scheme is part of the government’s Nature for Climate Fund programme, with the ambition to grow the nation’s forests.

Lincolnshire is one of the least wooded counties in England according to Forestry England, and the new woodland will be accessible to the public, giving benefits of a new green space, as well as creating new habitats for nature and a sustainable timber resource. It is expected that tree planting at the Cadney site will begin during winter 2026/27.

INVESTMENT IN FACILITIES AT BRIGG TOWN FC
The most recent phase of upgrades, which were to the club’s changing room pavilion and community kitchen, were made possible by a grant of £50,000 from North Lincolnshire Council’s Community Grant Fund. This support, as match funding, helped unlock grants and finance from other sources for the wider scope of the project.

These investments will not only help the club but also offer improved facilities and access to fans, players and also the wider community. The project to develop the club has also seen the installation of a 3G football turf and floodlit pitch, and refurbishment of the clubhouse.

The new facilities can be used by the community throughout the year and as well as the club’s existing dementia group it is hoped that a new disability football team and a walking football team for the over-fifties will be formed.

Working closely with the council, Brigg Town Council, local schools, community organisations and voluntary groups, there is much improved opportunity for all ages to participate in sport, physical and social activities.
