Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle, rhythmic technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, promoting detoxification and enhancing overall well-being.
This unique treatment offers a multitude of benefits, including reduced swelling and inflammation, improved circulation, and boosted immune function.
By encouraging lymph flow, it helps eliminate toxins and waste, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and revitalised.

MYOPIA MANAGEMENT AT WALTERS OPTICIANS
Myopia, or short-sightedness, is a common vision condition that affects millions worldwide, particularly children and adolescents. The importance of myopia management cannot be overstated, as the prevalence of this condition is increasing at an alarming rate. Effective management strategies are crucial to prevent the progression of myopia, which can lead to severe eye health issues later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts.
Owner Roy Walters FBDO SMC tech says: “Regular eye exams can help detect myopia early which is crucial in preventing progressive myopia. Options such as myopia management MySight contact lenses, as well as the Essilor Stellest spectacle lenses, are both available on payment plans at Walters Opticians.
Additionally, promoting outdoor activities and reducing screen time can also contribute to better eye health.
“By prioritising myopia management, we can safeguard the vision of future generations, ensuring they maintain a high quality of life and reducing the risk of complications associated with advanced myopia.”

AI IN EYE CARE FOR EARLY DETECTION
Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in eye care, particularly in the analysis of retinal images. During a routine eye examination, retinal scans capture detailed images of the back of the eye, including the optic nerve, macula and blood vessels. AI can now help to quickly identify patterns that may indicate early signs of diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.
AI systems are trained on thousands of scans, learning to recognise subtle changes that may be difficult to detect with the human eye alone. This allows for faster, more accurate and often earlier detection and treatment. Importantly, AI does not replace the expertise of your optometrist – it supports their diagnosis and treatment decisions. Speak to our team at David Burghardt Vision Care about how ourcomprehensive eye examinations can help protect your vision and eye health.

HEALTH IN A HEARTBEAT
Personal trainer and former chef Ian Eassom reminds us how making even the smallest changes to our lifestyle can have a positive impact on our health.
As summer winds down along with outdoor parties, barbecues and holidays, routines resume so September offers the perfect opportunity to reassess our habits – and what better place to start than with your heart?
Cardiovascular disease remains the UK’s biggest killer, but here’s the good news: up to 80% of premature heart disease is preventable. That’s why small changes to your lifestyle made consistently can make a huge difference to your long-term health.
Heart-lifestyle connection
Your heart works hard for you 24/7, but poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, excess alcohol, stress, and poor sleep can all take their toll. These are some of the factors that often contribute to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) reports that heart and circulatory diseases cause around a quarter of all deaths in the UK but the vast majority are linked to our lifestyle.
High blood pressure – the silent killer: You can’t feel high blood pressure but over time it quietly damages your arteries and puts strain on your heart. That’s why it’s known as the silent killer.
Many pharmacies now offer free blood pressure checks, it takes just minutes and could save your life. A healthy blood pressure is typically around 120/80 mmHg.
Understanding Cholesterol: the good, the bad and the manageable. Cholesterol is a fatty substance in your blood. You need some of it, but too much of the bad LDL cholesterol can clog arteries and increase your risk of heart attack or stroke.
Obesity: healthy heart eating tips can also be found on the British Heart Foundation website and include some helpful advice, including:
• Swapping saturated fats like butter and red meat for unsaturated fats like olive oil, avocado, nuts and flaxseeds
• Eating plenty of fibre found in oats, lentils and vegetables.
• Cutting back on processed and fried foods
For a guide to portion sizes as well as healthy eating, visit The British Heart Foundation website www.bhf.org.uk
Body shape matters
Tummy tyres aren’t just cosmetic. Carrying excess fat around your middle, known as being apple-shaped, is linked with a greater risk of heart disease. That’s because visceral fat (fat stored around your organs) can lead to insulin resistance, inflammation, and higher blood pressure.
Waist measurement goals:
Men: keep waist under 94cm (37 inches)
Women: Keep waist under 80cm (31.5 inches)
Even modest weight loss (5-10% of your body weight) can have big benefits for your heart health.
Remember it’s never too late to change. Whatever your age, changing your habits today can improve your heart health and overall wellbeing tomorrow.
Start with small, sustainable changes. Add a brisk 20-minute walk daily, cook one more meal at home each week, try a new stress reducing hobby such as gardening, swap sugary drinks for water or herbal teas.
You don’t need perfection, you just need consistency!
Heart-healthy reset checklist
• Book a blood pressure check
• Measure your waist – and set a healthy goal
• Make one smart food swap (e.g. butter to olive oil)
• Find a new healthy recipe no matter how simple each week which is low in bad fat, sugar and salt
• Choose one habit to change — and start today
• Consistently and engaging in physical activity.
Exercise improves heart strength, circulation, blood pressure and cholesterol, lowers the risk of heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes, it also helps manage weight, reduces stress, and improves sleep, all of which support our heart health.
150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week (such as brisk walking, cycling, or swimming), plus muscle strengthening activities twice a week would be ideal and are all going to benefit not just the heart but our mobility and mental health too!
Your heart deserves care, and it’s never too late to make changes that truly matter. So this September, as you get back into routine, make your health your priority. A stronger heart means a stronger you!
Now we are on our way to having a healthier heart, here’s a very simple and delicious heart-healthy beetroot recipe that’s easy to prepare and packed with cardiovascular benefits.
I like this dish because it can be served with fish, grilled meat etc., as part of a main dish or even adding a little bit of chopped feta will complement the flavours, but it also makes a pretty and refreshing starter.
The beetroot is rich in nitrates, which help lower blood pressure and improve blood flow; it also contains betalains, powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory effects.
Walnuts, high in omega-3 fatty acids, reduce the risk of heart disease and help improve cholesterol levels and decrease inflammation.
Olive oil, a staple of the Mediterranean diet, is linked to reduced cardiovascular risk and packed with monounsaturated fats and antioxidants.
Leafy greens and citrus provide fibre, vitamin C, and potassium, all of which support heart health; the citrus may also enhance nitric oxide availability, further aiding the blood.
