Welcome to this month’s brilliant bumper issue, which is packed with fascinating features, inspirational ideas and much more!

We’re starting to feel more than just a little festive as we team up once again with our partners at Downtown Stores to bring you a 36-page Christmas shopping supplement with fantastic gift ranges to explore. You will also find our own seasonal guide to help you plan ahead for the big day while supporting Lincolnshire businesses.

This month we will also be celebrating the best of Lincolnshire food, drink and hospitality businesses as we gather for our annual Taste of Excellence Awards evening on Wednesday 4th November, this time at a special new venue, Charlotte House Hotel in Lincoln. Our judges have been out and about reviewing the shortlisted nominees and we’ll be reporting on the event in next month’s issue, so if you are unable to join us on the night, make sure you order your copy!

Lincolnshire is a county bursting with history while revealing fascinating characters from bygone times. As we mark this month’s Remembrance Sunday, Kate Chapman caught up with author Chris Ward, who has recently written his 57th book, which is part of a series called RAF Bomber Command Profiles (page 28).

Chris, who also gives tours at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in East Kirkby, says his lifelong passion for delving into the past dates back to early childhood: “In 1955, when I was seven, my aunt took me to see The Dam Busters movie at the cinema, although I didn’t understand everything, I was hooked.”

The county’s history is also celebrated by Dene Bebbington, who looks back at the remarkable story of Halford Mackinder, the father of geography who was born in Gainsborough, where a plaque commemorating him sits on his family’s former home, Elswitha House. Also a co-founder and lecturer at the London School of Economics, Mackinder’s extensive geopolitical ideas left a legacy in world affairs (p.50).

Enjoy this special November edition and see you next month!
