Country Wisdom: “If you want to know how to fix something, don’t wait until it breaks!”
Gertie needed to be the one to handle Jeepers – after that he was ready and Major Dukynkowski, ‘Doc Dook’ to his men, knew the wisdom of don’t waste good. ‘Flappin Jack’ was ambitious, ‘Maltese Mike’ was furious and Gertie was restless… and there was an ambulance-and-crew-shaped space on that hospital ship heading for North African shores.
Flapping Jack was hopping, but Mrs Toombs knew the cure: the diminutive American needed to learn some manners… and she knew how to teach ’em.
Gertie took the slow-ways with Maltese Mike. The Italians had clipped those tunnels. “I don’t think all of him came out of there.” The Doc was inclined to agree. He could already guess Gertie’s intentions and that suited him fine. “We’ll see Rommel gets that message from your Malta-mates.”
Mike wanted back ‘in’ on the fight and Jack wanted out of the office… and by the time they got to Algiers they had acquired a reluctant American truck driver, an intriguing French briefcase and those two POWs were looking in better shape than Gertie. “Jeez lad, when did that happen!?”
And that tall blue stranger called Freddie proved to be quite an eye-opener, too.
These stories are set within the Second World War, during key moments and through decisive battles… but they are essentially about a Lincolnshire village errand-boy and his friends, helping where they can, fighting when they must and discovering country wisdom and common-sense hold true the world over, war or no war!
