Sicily had gone smoothly enough for the Allies, Salerno less so and Naples was an utter shambles! Clark wanted to leap-frog Kesselring’s Winter Line, but Lucas was dithering between dunes and marshland and the Germans already held the hills.

For Gertie and Pads it took a gaggle of geese to make the introductions but, thankfully, Tio and Mario agreed on the fight long before the German motorbike turned up. Freddie had warned them: “It’s all about the approach” and he hadn’t been kidding! And, by the time the errand basket was laden no one noticed the snaffled dynamite!

The mountains were the right way, but the Allies were going about it all wrong!

Cassino was getting hammered from all sides, but the locals had long since accepted the toll. They’d set out with sabotage in mind and, to Gertie’s way of thinking, those two Stugs were a good start!

Of course, it was a ridiculous plan, but no one had a better one and they needed a count on that German nest. They’d fight through the flying shrapnel with nothing more than slingshots and broom-handles if needs be, to get the message through: “YOU’VE GOT PARATROOPERS UP YOUR REAR!”

Then there were more shouts, as their fellows scrambled across the remnants of shattered homes to their aid. The Italians had lost so much, but were already rising … and ready for vengeance!

It was one heck of a rescue – riding through Cassino town in a polished bathtub, on a mule cart driven by a monumentally large brothel-keeper – on the eve of the Allies arriving!
