Description

Welcome to our latest issue, which spotlights many of our county’s special people and must-visit events taking place this summer.

Caroline Bingham caught up with Lincoln-based sculptor Michael Thacker, who is also one of the local artists showing at the Sculpture at Doddington exhibition, which runs from 26th July to 7th September.

Michael’s works are recognisable from their highly polished surfaces, fluid, organic shapes and the luminous natural light reflected from precious metal leaf within crevices and formations in the stone.

and almost every piece in the exhibition is for sale, which could prove a wise investment! (See page 34)

Kate Chapman took a step back in time as she caught up with members of the British Westerners Association (BWA), who get together each year in April and August to revisit life in the old Wild West (p.82).

American history is recreated at their traditional re-enactment camps, which take place near Holbeach, featuring campfire cookouts, live country music, archery, quick draw shoot-outs, lassoing and axe-throwing competitions.

BWA vice-chairman Karl Crawford says: “The events are great fun – everybody looks out for each other, there’s a real family feel to them.”

Meanwhile, Glynis Fox met nonagenarian Pat Woods, founder and president of The Lincoln Contemporary Club, which she founded in 1962 (p.101).

Sprightly 92-year-old Pat loves nothing more than staying active, meeting friends and enjoying chats with fellow members of this rather special luncheon club which gets together every month in the city.

Guest speakers are a highlight of these meet-ups and have included British mountaineer Chris Bonington, historian and author Tracy Borman, politicians Ann Widdecombe and Edwina Currie, plus Professor Jonathan Van-Tam.

According to Pat, it’s all about fun and friendship and there’s no age barrier to joining, so if you enjoy meeting and mixing with new people, do get in touch with the group to learn more. I’m sure you’ll receive a warm welcome!
