Description
This issue takes on a historic theme as we see the long-awaited installation and unveiling of the amazing life-size steel sculpture of the imposing Lancaster bomber towering over the A46 at Norton Disney (page 8).
It has taken many years of fundraising and planning to see On Freedom’s Wings, which honours the RAF crews of World War Two, finally take flight and it is hoped that the site will be open to the public this autumn.
Stepping further back in time on the eve of Lincolnshire Day (1st October), Matt Limb OBE reflects on the history of the Lincolnshire Regiment and the men awarded the Victoria Cross within its ranks (p.76).
Founded in the seventeenth century, the proud regiment, known as The Lincolns, went on to fight in two world wars. Over its long history, 10 members of The Lincolns received the highest award for gallantry, the Victoria Cross, each demonstrating bravery, determination and selflessness under fire.
If you want to find out more, be sure to check out Matt’s new book Valour – The Victoria Cross and The Lincolnshire Regiment: Ten Men, Ten Stories, One Regiment, which tells the heroic stories and reveals moments of extraordinary courage.
Digging even further back into Lincoln’s rich history, archaeologist and author Dr Mick Jones’s latest book examines how the city’s archaeology was recorded from the time of the early antiquaries to the modern day (p.66).
Dr Jones, who has dedicated his life to uncovering Lincoln’s secrets, hopes that the exciting discoveries and the remarkable story of the city will help inspire and enthuse the next generation.
“People come to see a place partly to enjoy its heritage. There’s also the benefits from education – enthusing children about the past – and local people being proud of their town and the rich history it has.
“We’ve also been able to add many more artefact finds to the museum collections. Without the digs, they would never have seen the light of day.”
Back to today and as the awards season dawns, you will find our list of nominees for Taste of Excellence 2025, our 29th awards, which takes place at The Drill in Lincoln next month – did your favourite eatery or hospitality business make the final cut? (p.56)
