Louth is full of festivities

A popular destination in the East Lindsey district, the market town of Louth is ready to welcome you this season with its array of entertainment events, fine produce and specialist services.

Whether you’re visiting for a day out, romantic weekend, or family holiday, Louth offers an array of activities, independent shops and locations that capture the essence of traditional English charm.

December in Louth sees a blend of tradition and modern cultural vibrancy. From the festive Christmas market to the joyful musical performances and scenic winter walks, the town provides a cosy and memorable winter escape.

The shopping season kicks off on Sunday 30th November with the Victorian Christmas Market in the town centre. Organised with the Louth Town Action Group, this festive highlight recreates the charm of a Victorian-era Christmas with stalls offering handmade crafts, festive foods and unique gifts. Visitors can also enjoy street entertainment, carol singing, and traditional holiday decorations.

Sticking with the festive shopping theme, don’t miss the Brackenborough Christmas Market which takes place at the Brackenborough Lakes Resort on Wednesday 3rd December from 2pm.

This scenic venue will host a variety of stalls, with 25 local artisans, seasonal products and family-friendly activities. From unique gifts and decorations to delicious treats and warm beverages, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Another popular event is the Louth Santa Run For Life, which takes place on Sunday 7th December at 11am, when the town is turned into a festive sea of red.

Jointly organised by the Louth Rotary Club, this event which is running for the second year is co-ordinated by supporters on behalf of Cancer Research UK with the assistance of Cancer Research UK staff.

The event starts and finishes in Louth Market Place and will be a town centre course. The route will offer a choice of one or two laps (approximately 2km or 4km). This is a fun event for all the family to be involved in, whether you want to run or walk the course. If you are interested in volunteering with the team to support participants on the day, contact Andrea.Day@cancer.org.uk

For those looking for seasonal indoor entertainment, don’t miss Louth Playgoers’ festive musical, Christmas Is Coming, at the Riverhead Theatre on 12th December at 7pm.

There’s something genuinely heart-warming about community theatre, and Louth Playgoers Society does it very well. They’ve been performing since 1922, making them one of Britain’s oldest amateur dramatic groups. Their home at the Riverhead Theatre stands as testament to the town’s commitment to grassroots culture – the venue was largely funded by community donations and runs almost entirely on volunteer power.

However, don’t let the “amateur” label fool you – their production values are anything but!
The 200-seat auditorium hosts everything from Shakespeare to pantomime, often with surprising technical ambition and talent.

Located in the centre of the town on Cannon Street, The Louth Playhouse has been showing films in the same converted Victorian chapel since 1921. While it’s been modernised with digital projection and comfy seating, the main auditorium still retains its curved ceiling and original decorative plasterwork.

The Playhouse is open daily. Adult tickets are £8.50, with concessions available. The small bar serves local beers and spirits – arrive 30 minutes early to enjoy a pre-film drink. The cinema is also available for private hire and parties.

GO OUTDOORS!
Louth has earned the title of the ‘capital of the Wolds’, and it’s easy to see why. With its quaint streets lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings, this month is the perfect time to explore this picturesque town.

The cobbled streets, especially around the town centre and Market Place, are often adorned with festive decorations, giving the area a warm, welcoming glow during the dark, chilly winter nights.

Stroll past the striking St James’ Church, whose spire towers above the town. The church is a focal point of Louth’s skyline and is well-known for its gothic beauty.

Known locally as the ‘Cathedral of the Lincolnshire Wolds’, this magnificent medieval church boasts the tallest spire in Lincolnshire, standing at 295 feet.

In December, the church hosts a range of Christmas services and carol concerts, adding to the festive atmosphere. Visitors can also explore the church’s interior, which features stunning stained-glass windows and a magnificent organ.

Take your canine friend and head to Hubbard’s Hills, a beautiful park on the outskirts of Louth. The park features tranquil streams, woodland areas, well-maintained trails and picnic spots, making it ideal for a peaceful stroll or a place to stop and reflect while enjoying the crisp winter air.

The park looks especially enchanting in winter when the bare trees and frozen ponds create a serene atmosphere.

Set in 37 acres of woodland just outside the town at Kenwick Park, Back 2 Bear offers exciting activities, such as target archery, axe throwing, Nerf Wars and camp experiences for every age group and interest.

There’s a variety of other options too – from CQB paintball and laser tag to wilderness skills such as shelter-building, whittling, and survival techniques.

Families with younger children aren’t left out either. The ‘Bug Huts & Hunt’ and soft archery sessions (suitable from age 3+) will keep your little ones captivated for the full hour. For older kids who love problem-solving challenges, the ‘Maze of Keys’ is recommended.

Open from Wednesday to Sunday, booking is essential. Archery for ages 6+, axe throwing 12+. £26 per person per activity, family discounts available. Wear outdoor clothing and closed-toe shoes.

EATING AND SHOPPING
After a day of exploring, there’s nothing like sitting down to relax and enjoy a tasty meal in one of Louth’s welcoming pubs, cafés and restaurants.

The town boasts a fantastic selection of eateries, from traditional pubs to more modern bistros, including chef patron Gareth Bartram’s Restaurant Auction House in the Cornmarket, which offers an à la carte and tasting style menu featuring influences from all over the globe and earning a much-coveted inclusion in this year’s Michelin Guide.

The town’s food scene, which draws heavily from the surrounding countryside, is perfect for those who want to enjoy seasonal fare. Expect hearty British dishes such as roast dinners, steaks, and locally sourced fish. Many pubs offer real ales brewed in the region which you can enjoy while relaxing by a crackling fire.

Make sure you stop off at the renowned food emporium Lakings Butchers, Bakers and Delicatessen, which was established in 1908 and provides high-quality meats and locally sourced products, including home-made Lincolnshire sausages.

Another must is a visit to The Cheese Shop in Eastgate, which was featured on the Hairy Bikers Food Tour of Britain. Beyond the incredible cheese selection (including Lincolnshire Poacher and Cote Hill), they also bake delicious sourdough, tarts, scones and brownies that locals queue for, as well as producing stunning cheese wedding ‘cakes’ (stacked cheeses).

Also in Eastgate, Lucks of Louth has been part of Louth’s shopping scene since 1985 and this family-run business continues to attract those in search of quality country clothing for children, as well as ladies and menwear.

Inside you will find the latest fashion from well-known brands such as Barbour, Dubarry, Schöffel and many more, as well as Fairfax & Favor and Seeland.

The town’s other independent shops, many of which are housed in centuries-old buildings, offer unique Christmas gifts, from local artwork to handcrafted jewellery.

Even though it’s winter, finish off your shopping with a visit to the award-winning Baci & Co in the Cornmarket which sells delicious scoops of home-made artisan gelato made from natural ingredients.

Owner Darren Swales produces hundreds of different flavour combinations but limits the display to just 12 at a time. So there’s a good chance that every time you pop in, you’ll be treated to something completely new. Dairy-free and vegan options are always available, plus outdoor seating available when weather permits.

With its festive spirit and unique charm, Louth is ready to make your December experience one to remember.

LOCALLY SOURCED, PEAT-FREE COMPOST
As traditional peat supplies came under threat, Lincolnshire farmer James Casswell dedicated himself to creating a compost that would match, if not surpass, peat’s performance without the environmental impacts.

“I was frustrated by the low-quality alternatives on the market,” said James, “so I began to test, hold field trials and refine which plant sourced ingredients, and those I could source from the farm, would produce a high-performance compost.”

The farm now grows materials which are specifically used for EcoGreen compost. Willow is grown on wetter areas, which helps to clean water, prevent water pollution and is an excellent habitat for wildlife.

The farm also grows tailor-made green covers to provide nutrients for the compost. The grass, flower and legume areas are home to beehives in the summer and sheep in the autumn. Lastly, straw from the cereal crops is added to the mix. The result is a compost which is effective, locally sourced, environmentally friendly and 100% peat-free.
