Towns look to the future

This season sees uplift in new developments and exciting events taking place in Boston and Spalding.

The traditional market town of Boston is a major draw for history buffs and those interested in English heritage, thanks to its most iconic landmark, St Botolph’s Church, colloquially referred to as ‘The Stump’, one of the largest parish churches in England.

Once a major medieval port, Boston is considered a charming, less crowded destination for visitors, with proximity to nature reserves including Frampton Marsh for birdwatching and coastal walks.

KEY OF THE DOOR
Major developments are dominated by housing and town centre regeneration projects. Wainfleet Road is paving the way for a vibrant, well-designed community offering new homes for first-time buyers, local families, renters and older residents.

Developers Langcroft have collaborated with Legal & General Affordable Homes, Housing 21, Boston Borough Council, Homes England and rg+p Ltd Architects to deliver the transformative new 200 affordable home neighbourhood.

The scheme is being built by local contractor Seagate Homes Construction and will represent a £40 million investment into the town. Langcroft identified the Wainfleet Road site for its exceptional location.

TOP ATTRACTIONS
Several key events are planned for the town in the coming months, including the 901st May Fair, scheduled to take place from 2th-9th May in Central Park.

This historic event is one of the top five street fairs in the country, and features attractions including dodgems, carousels and food stalls, games and entertainment. The fairground itself historically has allowed free entry, with individual tickets or wristbands purchased for rides, which vary in price.

Councillor Dale Broughton, Leader of Boston Borough Council, said: “The Boston May Fair is one of our town’s most treasured traditions, and welcoming it back once again is something we look forward to all year!”

A brand-new live music festival will be coming to Central Park on Sunday 2nd August. B-Fest 2026 will feature a mix of live music acts, including local performers and popular tribute bands. Visitors also will be able to enjoy a range of food and drink stalls throughout the park. The new initiative is funded by the Boston Town Area Committee (BTAC) and aims to bring the community together for a day of entertainment and celebration in one of Boston’s most popular green spaces.

NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED
Boston’s Strongest and Food Fest 2026 is an annual event, organised by Mayhem Gym, and combines elite strongman competitions with a local food market with local traders, food stalls and vendors.

Held in the Town Centre/Market Place, it features car deadlifts, lorry pulls and concrete atlas stone lifts, with the event on 19th July promising to be bigger and better than ever. The event draws crowds of thousands, celebrating local food and showcasing high-intensity, professional and amateur strength sports.

GRAND DESIGN
Explore the impressive architecture of Fydell House on South Street, a quaint Queen Anne-era manor house with Georgian alterations, nestled in the heart of the Cultural Quarter. Known as the Grandest House in Boston, the Grade One listed building was owned by the Fydell family until it was bought by Boston Preservation Trust in the 1930s.

The house hosts regular events which showcase many of its beautiful architectural features, including the Rococo work in the magnificent staircase. Regular art exhibitions are on the display and every Wednesday the Garden Room is turned into a tearoom which serves homemade refreshments. The garden is a calm oasis to be enjoyed in warm summer weather. Guided tours of the house are free.

UK TOWN OF CULTURE BID
In March, Boston Borough Council announced that the town would be submitting an expression of interest to become the UK Town of Culture 2028, with a summer programme of events, exhibitions, performances and other community-led creative projects to be scheduled if the bid is successful.

The council’s bid aims to build on the town’s unique 1,000-year story, from its role as a major trading hub during the medieval period and its links with Boston, Massachusetts in the USA, in order to celebrate a place shaped “by land and by sea”, exploring themes of travel, trade and “portable heritage”.

Following a period of engagement with local residents, community groups and Boston Town Board, feedback has shown a desire for more cultural activities, opportunities for the young people and programmes that help reconnect communities with Boston’s international history and its modern identity.

Claire Foster, interim chair of Boston Town Board, said: “Boston is a town rich in culture and history and our consultation has clearly demonstrated the importance of the town’s heritage and creative offer to local people.”

Councillor Sarah Sharpe, portfolio holder for Heritage, Culture and Tourism, said: “Culture plays such a vital role in how people experience their town and this programme would really bring Boston’s fantastic stories to life and support our range of diverse communities.”

SPALDING: THE HEART OF THE FENS
The attractive market town of Spalding is renowned for its Georgian houses that front the tree-lined River Welland, which runs through the centre of the town. Spalding is famous as the heart of the UK’s flower and vegetable industry, especially for its tulip bulb heritage.

Known as the ‘Heart of the Fens’, it boasts rich soil for horticulture, historic buildings and attractions such as Moulton Windmill – Britain’s tallest mill at 100ft. The Grade I listed building was built in 1822 and has been restored to a fully operational, wind-driven windmill producing flour.The original sails were destroyed during a storm in 1894, and the mill stood without sails for over 100 years.

Following the retirement of the last miller and the subsequent sale of the mill, several residents got together, and in 1998 formed the Friends of Moulton Mill to raise funds with the intention of restoring the mill.

During restoration, a tearoom was built in the old granary, a reefing gallery was fitted, and the sails were finally attached in 2011. Relax in the Granary Tea Room or take a guided tour to the top for fabulous views of the area.The mill is located on High Street, Moulton, midway between Spalding and Holbeach, just off the A151. Opening hours are from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. 

GARDEN OF HOPE
A community-led art installation encouraging conversations about mental health and suicide prevention will tour venues across Lincolnshire, including Ayscoughfee Hall Museum & Gardens from 11th to 30th May.

The installation features 98 butterflies representing the 98 suicides registered in the county in 2024, honouring each life lost whilst also symbolising hope and connection. People of all ages, from pre-school children to residents in retirement communities, painted the butterflies, with schools, families and community groups contributing artwork.

Grantham Fabrication produced the steel butterflies supporting the project from design through to creation. The installation aims to make difficult conversations more approachable through colour and creativity.

EXHAUST-ING TIME
Spalding Town Centre will come alive with live music and motorbikes on Sunday 9th August, with a free community event hosted by Spalding Business Improvement District (BID) from 12noon to 6pm.

BID is a business-led, independent initiative aimed at improving the town centre through a mandatory levy on local traders. Operating since late 2024, it aims to boost footfall and trade by focusing on four key themes: making the town safer and cleaner; improving marketing and events; enhancing accessibility; and backing local business.

BID is partnering with local business Live Promotions to deliver the event.

DEVELOPING NEWS
New Burger King and Starbucks drive-thru restaurants have been approved for construction near the A16/A151 Springfields roundabout. The development, located near Fulney Lane North, will feature 51 parking spaces and is set to bring new food options and jobs to the area. 

At the time of going to press, applications for signage and detailed design, including fascia signs and drive-thru menus, had been submitted. This follows a new standalone Starbucks which opened at the Welcome Break Applegreen services on the A16/A1175, replacing the former Costa Coffee. A new Costa Coffee and a potential supermarket also are planned for a nearby site at the proposed South Holland Retail Park. These developments are part of a wider expansion of fast food and coffee options on the outskirts of the town.
