Enjoy a “double day out”

Glynis Fox recommends a combined visit to Boston and Spalding, to make the most of the variety that they offer.

Every town and city in Lincolnshire has its own unique identity, but have you ever considered visiting two places on the same day?

Apart from being fun, doing so can give you greater insights into what is special about different areas.

This can include what is manufactured or grown there, exciting plans for the future and changes which are already underway.

If you have a car, it is easy to visit Boston and Spalding on the same day. They are only 15 miles apart, or a quick 30-minute drive. There’s a variety of shopping to enjoy, events to attend, visitor attractions to check out and you can even take to the water in both locations!

In late March, Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet members were poised to further consider the Boston Borough Plan 2040 – which sets out a long-term vision to ensure that it is a thriving, inclusive and sustainable place that’s fit for the future. Residents, businesses and partners have been involved in identifying priorities designed to boost the economy, and improve health and sustainability across the area. By 2040, it is hoped the town will have a strong and resilient economy where people can get access to jobs, skills training, live in good quality homes and enjoy a safe and healthy environment.

Boston Borough Council Leader, Councillor Anne Dorrian said: “Through consultation, our residents and businesses told us that while investment in the town centre is crucial, we must also recognise the importance of our rural communities and ensure they are not left behind. That is why this plan takes a truly borough-wide approach, addressing the unique challenges and opportunities across 19 parishes, from housing and jobs to infrastructure and sustainability.”

Meanwhile the town is certainly not standing still. The council is leading the Rosegarth Square regeneration project, which is funded by £14.8 million of Government money. Demolition work was well underway as we went to press with the aim of transforming the area between the River Witham and the town’s bus station into a vibrant public area, with a new park, housing and shopping opportunities.

SHOPPING AND SIGHTSEEING IN BOSTON
Boston has a mix of shopping and attractions. Mainstream stores include Boots, TK Maxx, Next, furniture retailer Cammacks, fashion house Coneys and smaller stores such as the ladies’ fashion boutique Cherries of Boston.

If you are a fan of browsing market stalls, the council has announced that a new Makers & Farmers market will be staged in the Market Square on the last Saturday of the month up to and including 25th October. It will be open from 9am to 2pm.

For a limited time, stallholders were offered a special “buy one market day and get one free” deal, which could potentially attract new traders. Anyone wishing to snap up that offer will need to contact the council to see if it is still available.

For visitors old and new, Boston’s most famous feature is The Stump – formally known as St Botolph’s Parochial Church of Boston – which is a must-visit attraction. Interestingly, this landmark is a ‘calendar church’ because it has 7 doors, 12 pillars, 52 windows, and 365 steps leading up to its tower.

The Stump offers guided tours, but if you want to climb up the tower, please make sure you are fit enough because this is one activity you do on your own.

Boston Guildhall is also worth a visit. This distinctive medieval built building, established by The Guild of St Mary, dates back to 1390. Famous for the imprisonment and trial of the Pilgrim Fathers, it houses a museum, is available for events and civil ceremonies, and is also home to the town’s Tourist Information Centre.

The Maud Foster Windmill, with the finial topping its cap, reaches more than 80 feet into the skyline. It was originally built in 1819 for brothers Thomas and Isaac Reckitt, at a cost of £1,826 10s 6d, and is another landmark to check out.

When you’ve finished shopping and sightseeing, why not take time out for a river or sea trip aboard the Boston Belle, which accommodates 60 people. It takes parties out into The Wash and up the River Welland. Hopefully, will spot seals, seabirds or other wildlife, so pack your binoculars in case.

Also make sure you are in town between 3rd May and 11th May, when Boston will be celebrating the 900th anniversary of the Boston May Fair! There will also be a special celebratory exhibition, reminding of all the fun and colour of the May Fairs of years ago. It is being staged in Boston Guildhall and can be seen until 17th May.

MUST-SEE IN SPALDING
Spalding is situated in the heart of the Fens, an area which is recognised for its waterways, bulb growing, agriculture, riverside walks and historic architecture.

In the town centre you will find the Market Place with its mix of shops selling everything from footwear to clothing, books, household goods, food, flowers, and more. And if you love browsing market stalls, make sure you visit on a Tuesday or Saturday.

Follow the little alleys and streets leading off this main area and you will also discover a variety of niche shops selling antiques, menswear, books and gifts, flowers and much more. The town also boasts a variety of cafés. Many major retailers are based in the Market Place and nearby streets, but there are also larger stores at Holland Market.

Don’t miss the opportunity to check if there’s a good live show on at the popular South Holland Centre, which overlooks the Market Place. For anyone looking for rooms for hire for private celebrations or events, these are also available to hire at the centre.

But back to the entertainment! Three great dates coming up are: Friday 9th May – The Magic of The Bee Gees Greatest Hits Concert Show; on Saturday 24th May it’s The Rocket Man, a celebration of Sir Elton John and on Saturday 31st May, the Get It On! Glam Rock Show (featuring the biggest hits from Bowie, Mud, Slade, Suzi Quatro, Wizzard, T Rex and more).

Whilst in town, why not visit Chain Bridge Forge, located on the south bank of the River Welland. This living museum has preserved a 19th-century blacksmith’s workshop and transformed it into a space where visitors can discover all about the craft by watching demonstrations, take guided tours and enjoy hands-on experiences.

Another local attraction is Ayscoughfee Hall Museum and its lovely garden, set in 5.5 acres of land. The hall itself dates back to the mid-15th century, is Grade I listed and was originally a family home.

If you love museums, you might also find the Gordon Boswell Romany Museum on the edge of town riveting. It has been going for 30 years.

But there’s even more to discover in Spalding – by visiting the crowdpulling Springfields Outlet on the edge of town, which boasts 50 retail stores, the showcase Festival Gardens, Adventureland and the Blue Diamond Home & Garden Centre.

Naturally you can drive there, or why not do something different by leaving your car parked in town and catching the Spalding Water Taxi. This offers you the chance to relax for the 40-minute river cruise, which links the town centre with Springfields.

It’s a fantastic way to travel and, with luck, you will spot herons or other wildlife on the way. The water taxi runs until 28th September and you can enjoy a two-way trip. The operators of the business also offer self-drive boats and private charters.

Events-wise, if you are planning a visit to Spalding, you should note that it will be remarkably busy on 10th May when the town is hosting the fantastic Spalding Flower Parade. This year the event will actually be held at the Springfield Events Centre and the organisers have also confirmed they are planning to stage live entertainment the night before and run a regular bus service.

“Their expertise and loyalty have been invaluable in maintaining the high standards of service that our customers have come to expect.
