Outstanding bespoke furniture

“A passion for quality, style and value…” speaking with John and Richard Appleton, two of the directors of Chesterfields in Lincoln Limited.
Surprisingly it is five years now since Chesterfields in Lincoln was started as a retirement hobby – just three days a week.

“I didn’t miss working long hours but at the time a part-time enterprise really appealed to us and that is where Chesterfields in Lincoln began,” explained John. “My experience told me there was an opening for a bespoke furniture company which would use British craftsmen to supply the finest quality, handmade, traditional leather chairs and sofas.

“The mass market, in my opinion, often offers furniture built down to a price, frequently imported, which is poorly constructed and made of inferior quality materials and yet still very expensive! I knew I could offer a bespoke service which would create unique pieces of furniture for each customer. With 100% Beech hardwood frames and working with some of the best upholsterers and craftsman in the country, they would be unbeatable for quality and value.”

Five years later, demand has grown so much that Chesterfields of Lincoln is often a seven-day-a-week business in order to fulfil customer appointments.

A year ago, John and Colleen’s son Richard joined the team to help with the rapid expansion. Clients have been drawn not just from the county but from all areas of the UK.

“Traditional styles and colourways are still very popular,” said Richard, “but there is a growing trend for really funky palettes and club and tub chairs are ideal for smaller homes and apartments. Our ranges of beautiful leathers and fabrics offer thousands of combinations which are perfect for design led interiors.”

Richard explained that some clients come with a design already in mind and these can be fabricated to their specification.

“Our furniture is all bespoke. We will always supply traditional colours and styles, but our customers are great at pushing the boundaries; for example, we have made chairs and sofas in bright orange and red leather with crystal buttoning. A beautiful deep purple leather adds richness and glamour. A combination of leather and fabric work really well for an interesting modern twist.

“The newest addition to the range is a waxed, matt saloon leather which has a veined effect. It has a slightly distressed look and is entirely wipe clean. Perfect for busy households and contemporary lifestyles.”

There are exciting plans ahead for this family business where the customer always comes first. Not only are they pushing ahead to develop their ranges further but classic fabric choices such as velvet, tartans and chenille make luxurious, contrasting cushions and seating.
