January 2013

This time last year we woke up to find ourselves in 2012 and looking forward to an amazing year of sport and pageantry in which horses were to play such a great part. This year we wake up to, well, 2013. However, let’s not look back at last year with the idea that this year has nothing to offer. There are some great shows to look forward to and some exciting competitors in various equestrian disciplines who will thrill us with their brilliant achievements throughout the year.
What a year it was for Sophie Wells. The equestrian Paralympics star brought home a gold and two silver medals, and was honoured by having a golden postbox dedicated to her in Castle Square. She then ended the year with two more fantastic achievements – having been named as Lincolnshire Sports Personality of the Year and Lincolnshire Disabled Sports Person of the Year.

“I never went to the sports awards evening thinking I’d be in contention so it came as a fantastic surprise, quite a shock actually. It is a massive honour to win the award and I’m very grateful to everyone who has supported me.

“Now my sights are firmly set on Rio de Janeiro in 2016. We have horses that have been in training especially for then and I am hoping that we can do at least as well then, if not even better. In the meantime I want to promote equestrian sports as much as possible in the county and beyond. It was all very exciting in 2012 and we want to take that excitement forward throughout 2013 and into the future.”

BUSY YEAR FOR BROOK HOUSE
2012 proved to be a busy year at Brook House Farm at Scamblesby, between Louth and Horncastle, with all their services and facilities becoming increasingly popular and their holiday cottages also in demand.

Brook House Farm is a British Horse Society (BHS) approved riding school and livery yard, and an official Pony Club centre. The centre’s BHSAI qualified instructors supervise all riding activities and liveries and Brook House is insured for all riders aged four and over.

The 25m x 40m undercover Riding Hall is now used for most of the Brook House riding activities which can include lessons up to 8pm if necessary. As well as general riding and jumping there are also regular dressage lessons with instructor Amy Miller. Amy is competing with her own horse, Shar and Brooke House’s stallion, Temple Valentino and obtaining very good results, qualifying for Regional and National Championships with both.

Just about everything happens at Brook House including lessons, hacks and formal college training. Full, part or working livery, grass and DIY is available.

As an official Pony Club centre, there is always a wide range of activities including quizzes, show days and competition days and best of all, you do not need to own a pony to join!
