Gavin Madden arrives on the Isle of Stone in 2010, charged by the British government with an unusual task: to transform a small, remote Scottish island into an important recovery centre for injured war veterans and other disabled people, and a training centre for Paralympics. The job is never going to be an easy one. Back in Whitehall there are other government agencies with conflicting agendas, setting out to frustrate him. The island itself is a place of many secrets, of strange traditions and more than a hint of skulduggery – in fact, as he gradually learns to his cost, with a dark underbelly of crime and corruption.
