Oliver’s win takes him back to the number one slot
Winning Defender Burghley Horse Trials 2023 on Ballaghmor Class has helped Oliver Townend take the number one position in the FEI Eventing World Rider Rankings. Oliver has overtaken Ros Canter, who drops to world number two, while the US’s Boyd Martin – 9th and 10th at Burghley this year – climbs up to the number three slot.
Oliver said: “It is and always will be an honour to be at number one in your sport and it’s great to be back in that spot. The horses are incredible – they’re improving every day, have been so consistent and will always be my ultimate team mates. I also want to thank the massive amount of people behind me that make this happen.”

2024 charity of the year
Defender Burghley’s association with its 2023 supported charity, Horatio’s Garden, was a terrific success, producing some high-profile publicity and generating funds for this excellent charity. Are you involved with a charity – especially one close to the hearts of riders and horse lovers – which would benefit from Burghley’s support in 2024?
If so, email email@example.com for an application form – but don’t delay, as applications close shortly.
Next year’s Defender Burghley will take place from 5th to 8th September 2024.
The box office for ticket purchases will open in the spring. Gift vouchers for next year can be purchased now, and make great presents – as does a subscription to Burghley TV!
And don’t forget that you can relive all the action from this year’s Burghley (plus 2022’s event and other years besides), from the first horse inspection to the final trophy presentation, and catch up with anything you missed, on Burghley TV, which won rave reviews for its outstanding production.
