By William Gregory MRICS, Golding Young and Mawer.

Stuart Devlin was appointed Goldsmith and Jeweller to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1982.

Born in Australia in 1931, he graduated in 1957 with a diploma in gold and silversmithing from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology; he then went on to study at The Royal College of Art in London and Columbia University in New York.

In 1965, Stuart Devlin opened a workshop in London where he developed his style for intricate silverware with gilt light and filigree decoration.

Devlin’s style is instantly recognisable across the range of tablewares, curios and jewellery. He is best known for his Easter eggs and Christmas boxes, which are often produced in small limited editions.

One of his most prestigious commissions was to produce collector coins and medallions for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. He was a Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company and an Officer of the Order of Australia.

Retiring to the coastal town of Littlehampton, he died in 2018.

Illustrated are some of the examples of Devlin’s work recently sold at the Lincolnshire Auction Rooms.
