Lincolnshire’s local history at auction

Whilst auctions are now a truly global event, with the introduction of internet catalogues and online bidding, it is reassuring to find that Lincolnshire internet lots can still inspire the local collector.
In the past few months a number of items which have come up for auction have done just that.
Following a visit to a long standing client of Golding Young & Mawer, a very rare set of Ruston & Hornsby Limited minute books dating from the late nineteenth century through to the First World War were put up for auction. The books provide a fascinating historical record of the firm and its importance – in particular the role the company played in the First World War.
Local historians and collectors took a keen interest and it was pleasing to see the books selling to a local buyer with plans to research and document the collection.
Further items that recently appeared at auction include a Ruston & Hornsby Limited 50 years’ faithful service medal awarded to JE Greaves (1900-1950) and a number of signs. Possibly the most interesting was an enamel sign from the Second World War relating to the air raid shelters at Ruston & Hornsby.
The notice reminded employees that the shelters are for emergency only and any person found in the shelters at any other time will be instantly dismissed.
A threat we can safely assume JE Greaves managed to avoid.

Grantham school joins Carol Service in celebration of town’s hospital![]()

Pupils from St Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy are taking part in the first Carol Service to celebrate the special relationship Grantham and District Hospital has with the town and surrounding communities.![]()

The school children will join in the singing of favourite Christmas Carols as well as perform their own set musical piece at the Carol Service on Thursday 11th December at 7pm, in St Wulfram’s church, Grantham.![]()

Deputy Head Teacher Olivia Mumford said: “The Carol Service is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to share the joy of music while showing appreciation for the incredible work done at Grantham and District Hospital. It’s a privilege to support such an important event in our town."![]()

The Carol Service has been organised by United Lincolnshire Hospitals Charity, who work closely with staff at Grantham and District Hospital and provides those extras for staff and patients that NHS budgets are unable to fund. ![]()
