A collection of over 100 dioramas made quite a scene when they sold at a recent Lincoln auction for over £20,000.
Dioramas are a model or picture in three dimensional form and often enclosed in a glazed cabinet. The subject matter tends to recreate interior household scenes, shop interiors or landscapes.
In this form they appear to have originated in the early 19th century and were certainly popular with the Victorians.
The auction value is very much dependent on the artistic quality of sculpture, decoration and presentation.
The collection recently sold mostly dated from the 20th century but with 19th-century themes and interior scenes.
The works were also enhanced with amusing titles such as ‘A Lively Discussion Ensued Regarding Super Dave’s Painting of the Kitchen’ and ‘Captain Frobisher Finally Loses It’.
