Artists near and far

The August Lincoln Fine Art Auction consisted of over 500 lots, with all but a few finding eager buyers.
Top price of the day, for a painting, went to an acrylic on canvas titled Still life with pots and stringed instruments by British Artist Chris Gollon. Born in London in 1953, he developed his artistic career alongside musicians and filmmakers, as well as producing commissioned works for the Church of England.
His exhibition works were shown alongside multiple artists, and a three-month retrospective show was held at Huddersfield Art Gallery following his death in 2017. At the auction, brisk bidding took the final price to £3,000, doubling the pre-sale estimate.
On a musical theme, a Bob Dylan (b.1941), limited edition artist signed lithographic print of the words to ‘Forever Young’ found the right note at the sale, selling for £1,500.
Ralph Brown (1928-2013) was a Yorkshire sculptor working in the figurative genre. His 74cm high statue titled Walking Line was firmly crossed as the bidding ended at £2,200.
Buyers were not deterred, when a 19th-century oil on canvas of a young lady with a spaniel at her feet, without title or artist signature, came up for sale; the full-length portrait was easily rehomed after a final bid of £800.
Two Lincolnshire artists also engaged the bidders. Claude Andrew Calthrop (1845-1893) was born in Deeping St Nicholas, near Spalding, and went on to train in London and Paris. His style, based upon the 17th-century genre, was well received at the sale, with an oil on panel titled Court Jester seeing successful bidding to £1,100.
Finally, Boston artist William Bartol Thomas (1877-1947), watercolour ‘Game shooter with dog’ hit the target when it sold for £500.
