Lincoln fine art auction

Golding Young & Mawer held an evening auction of fine art on 27th April.
The 245 lot auction included a selection of nineteenth and twentieth-century watercolour and oil paintings, as well as other works of art. Local Lincolnshire artists were well represented and attracted good interest from collectors.

The auction started with an oil painting by local artist Peter Brannan. Born in Cleethorpes in 1926 he studied at Grimsby School of Art and then on to Leicester College of Art. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1960 and was later made president of the Lincolnshire Artists’ Society, which incidentally has its 110th exhibition showing at The Usher Art Gallery Lincoln until 15th June. Brannan’s works often show Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire scenes, with the east coast a special source of inspiration. A large selection of his works are on permanent display at Newark Town Hall Museum. Peter Brannan died in 1994 and is buried at Welbourn, Lincolnshire.

Lot 1 was an oil on canvas dated 1984 showing a typical Lincolnshire coast scene with children playing by the sand dunes, which doubled its auction estimate selling for a hammer price of £380. A second work of Brannan’s, a pastel of Mount Street School, sold for £170.

Another local artist included in the sale was Vincent Haddlesey (1934–2010). His oil (Lot 4) titled ‘Kings Troops Rehearsing Before the Lincolnshire Show’ made £750 as did another oil on canvas titled ‘Bougemont West Virginia’.

There were also several works by Cumbrian artist Len Roope (1917–2005). Lot 74 was a watercolour of Lincoln from the Brayford dated 1975, which sold for £120 and another of Lincoln High Street (Lot 78) sold to a local collector for £190.

Lot 84 was a watercolour of The Strait, Lincoln by Grimsby artist Colin Carr (1917–2005), past editor of Lincolnshire Life magazine.

Other notable results from the auction included £1,000 for a watercolour of a young maiden by Victorian artist Henry Hetherington Emmerson (Lot 53). Another watercolour by Frederick Goodall (1822–1904) sold for £700 and a pair of oil paintings by George Morland (1763-1804) sold to a telephone bidder for £750.

A selection of over fifty works by Peter Brannan and Boston artist William Bartol Thomas will be included in a two-day country house marquee sale to be held on 4th and 5th July. Further details to be announced nearer the sale date.
