Lord and Lady Cormack auction
By William Gregory MRICS, Golding Young & Mawer.
The majority contents of both Minster Yard, Lincoln and Lord & Lady Cormack’s Dolphin Square apartment in London were recently offered for auction following the sad passing of Lord Patrick Cormack, and Lady Cormack’s move to a new residence.
As expected, interest in the auction was considerable with over 1,250 bidders online, in addition to the regular client bidder register at the Lincoln Auction Rooms. Over £100,000 was spent, with buyers securing 91% of the 825 lots on offer.
A 19th-century oil on canvas showing the House of Commons from the Thames by William Crawhall set the theme for the auction selling for £1,600.
An early C19th brown glazed Staffordshire lion, after Ralph Wood, roared past its auction estimate as the hammer fell at £400.
Onto the political subject matter, of which there were many in the sale, a bronze casting of Winston Churchill secured a bid of £650.
Provenance as well as retailer combined as a green onyx and 9ct gold paper knife stamped Asprey ripped through the bidding at £460.
Pictures again caught the bidders’ eyes: a portrait of a young lady by Sir George Hayter sold for £2,400; while a watercolour of Lincoln Cathedral signed MW Sibthorpe went one bid better at £2,600.
Of the many collectables on offer, a Queen Victoria silver Golden Jubilee medal dated 1887 shone out at £1,300; and coming out of the shade, a silhouette of George III found a bid of £190.
A Iittala Finland glass bird gained a flutter of bids, eventually nestling down at £360.
A final notable lot was a Charles I and Henrietta Maria silver gilt Royalist badge and chain, which secured a winning bid of £950.
