Weights & measures

Auction sales have always been exciting events. The opportunity to obtain items with competitive bidding and the chance of a bargain seems an enticing opportunity.
While different auctions offer all types of goods and services, the regular furniture and effects sales have the widest appeal. The goods on offer at these auctions changes from week to week and it is not unusual to find the unusual. To be included in this category is a number of collections of weights and measures that have been offered at auctions across the county this year. These collections of vintage weights and measures are the equipment used by officers in the former HM Customs and Excise and Trading Standards. Although obsolete in commercial terms, collectors of kitchenalia and the unusual are competing to find new uses for these strange items. Collectors have been bidding for sets of bell weights and measuring jugs along with more unfamiliar named items such as dip rods, saccharometers, wine refractors, bung rods and hydrometers. Illustrated are a number of the items offered.
