“Sold to the internet bidder” is fast becoming a regular feature at auctions.
The internet now plays an important role in the sale of art, antiques and collectables. Auctioneers are not only able to place their catalogues online but can also offer prospective buyers the opportunity to bid in real time at the auction.

The two main platforms are to be found at the-saleroom.com and ukauctioneers.com. Registration is free but there is an additional charge typically 2.5% of the hammer price. These sites host hundreds of live auctions including those of Golding Young and Thos Mawer. Colin Young, principle Auctioneer, is proud of offering live auctions in Lincolnshire and whilst he acknowledges its growing importance he sees it as an extension of traditional professional practices.

Vendors may still require good experienced advice and buyers an exciting day out but the combination of well catalogued and illustrated auctions along with modern technology is proving very successful. The-saleroom.com reported £20 million in online sales for 2010 – an increase of over 130% from the previous year. The illustrations show items sold by Golding Young Thos Mawer to internet buyers.
