Lest we forget

25,611 Bomber Command aircrew lost their lives flying from airfields in Lincolnshire during World War Two, 46% of the Command’s losses. The memorial on the top of Canwick Hill, Lincoln marks their sacrifice, and the sterling efforts of all who served in the air and on the ground. In addition, the memorial honours the many Lincolnshire men and women who served in Bomber Command outside the county, and will inform generations to come of their courage and dedication. The site overlooks Lincoln Cathedral, a major landmark for crews leaving Lincolnshire and a navigation point for those lucky enough to return.
The official opening of the International Bomber Command Centre, Lincoln was held in cold and low cloud so unfortunately none of the planned flypasts took place. Nearly 4,000 guests, of whom more than 300 were veterans of Bomber Command, did witness a moving and thought provoking ceremony which culminated with each veteran cutting a ribbon to mark the occasion. Veterans had travelled from across the UK, Canada and Australia to meet for what will most likely be the last gathering of their generation of aircrew.
