Let’s take you back 30 years…

To a time when cellphones were hilarious (sorry, no texting), Sir Tim Berners-Lee was inventing the Internet, When Harry Met Sally was a hit on the big screen and ‘Maggie’ had been Prime Minister for ten years. Sky dishes were suddenly everywhere, Nintendo Game Boy was born, and the Grammy Award went to the song ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’.

And at Gonerby Moor just off the A1, Downtown the county’s favourite superstore opened. In 1989 Faith Brown, as Mrs Thatcher, opened Downtown the furniture and fashion superstore, just as the country crashed into recession! Perhaps not great timing but things have definitely looked up since those turbulent days. Downtown in its 30th year has proven its worth by ever re-inventing itself and keeping at the forefront of retail.

Saturday 14th September saw Downtown celebrate their official birthday with a mega 1980s themed day and a constant stream of memory-jogging, fun-filled activities – do you remember Rubik’s Cubes? Tasteless 1980s fashion and big, big hairstyles? Downtown’s visitors even got the chance to go for a burn in a Sinclair C5!
