Ronson lighters have been produced since the beginning of the 20th century.
By the 1920s the company enjoyed worldwide success with flip automatic lighters, which led to the development of touch tip table lighters. These table lighters incorporated Art Deco styling and design.
The influence of the Art Deco themes can be seen with the use of black enamel and sweeping chrome.
The nautical design of the great ocean liners, with turrets and fittings, can be seen in various models which have proved very popular with collectors.
Finally, novelty themes, such as the bar tender, ballerina, clock works and sporting figures continue to attract buyers.
Whilst the initial requirement of a table lighter has declined, the design appeal to today’s collectors has not.
Highlights of a collection recently sold at auction are illustrated; the auction grossed some £19,000 for the vendor’s total collection.
