A new gold standard
By William Gregory MRICS, Golding Young and Mawer.
The Lincoln Saleroom started the first week in September with some record-breaking numbers. Offering over 1,600 lots in three auctions, the online catalogues kept buyers busy.
Day One saw the first six lots of gold coins totalling £37,850 – with Lot 3, a 2024 United Kingdom gold proof Royal Mint thirteen coin set, making £15,000. Silver was also on offer in the form of a Victorian Fiddle pattern cutlery set with an engraved cruet which sold for £2,800.
Day Two comprised some 430 lots of traditional general household effects with a near 100% sold rate.
Day Three consisted of nearly 600 lots, being a one-owner collection of decorative furnishings and objets d’art from a property in Minster Yard, Lincoln. The stylish property and interiors attracted worldwide interest and bidding, with the auction totalling over £35,000.
Highlights started with Lot 1, a Regency Stucco Neoclassical figure in the form of a Greek muse which sold for £320. Lot 580, a Chinese bronze figure of a man holding a drinking vessel, achieved a little more as the hammer fell at £500. A Chinese Ming porcelain blue and white vase sold to an internet buyer for £800.
Top price for Day Three was £1,250 for a Louis XV Boulle bracket clock, a timely reminder of what can be achieved in three days with a considerable amount of teamwork in August.
