Fine Art auction

By William Gregory MRICS, Golding Young and Mawer.
A combination of new technology and old contacts saw the Lincoln Fine Art sale achieve record sales totalling over £130,000, with a near perfect selling rate. Auctioneers William Gregory and Colin Young shared the rostrum to keep the lot rate up and count the multiple bids both in the room and on two dedicated online bidding sites, headed by GY-live. The auction started at a pace with the first three lots by Salford artist LS Lowry all selling above top estimate; best price went to a pencil sketch, ‘Village Mill with figures’, which sold to a telephone bidder for £8,500.

Top price at the sale went to a watercolour by the celebrated artist Archibald Thorburn, titled ‘Grouse on the Moor’ and with an original Moorland Gallery label. It sold to a telephone bidder for £9,000.

A fifty lot selection of pictures under the heading ‘Lincolnshire Artists’ got the buyers clicking buttons and raising their bidding paddles. Highlights included £550 for an oil titled ‘The hunt; edge of the woods’ by John Trickett. £480 was bid for a watercolour drawing ‘Fishing on the banks of The Witham’, by the Boston artist William Bartol Thomas. A watercolour drawing ‘Horse and riders winter street scene’ by the Lincoln artist Vincent Haddelsey doubled the auction estimate, selling for £420.

Auction fever went to Lot 103. Consigned without reserve and minimal expectation, the 14cm x 11cm oil on metal panel, catalogued as 19thC School, ‘Madonna with child, and monk’, got the bidding screens flashing up to a successful bid of £1,600.
