Classic treats at Cleatham Hall
Barbara Young visits the historic Cleatham Hall Hotel for a timeless taste of country house fare.
Whether you’re looking for a perfect way to catch up with special friends, impress an important business client, celebrate a special family occasion or host an exclusive wedding, a visit to this charming Grade II-listed Georgian house in a stunning country setting is a great way to escape modern day stresses.
Dating back to the 17th century and rebuilt in 1855, with important links to the ancestors of Charles Darwin, this boutique heritage hotel with eight en suite bedrooms has been lovingly restored by its owners Jim and Kate Anderson since they moved here in 2010.
Renowned for their warm, welcoming and friendly hospitality, the couple are dedicated to providing a first-class guest experience for all while creating what feels like being invited inside a family’s treasured country retreat from the moment you step inside.
This elegant hotel has earned a well-deserved reputation as a first-class bespoke wedding venue, as well as offering lunches, afternoon teas and dinners, plus special “event” evenings held throughout the year.
Overnight guests also enjoy full English breakfasts with local produce sausages and bread from Market Rasen Bakery.
Set within 10 acres of ancient parkland and private grounds, with pretty pockets featuring traditional cottage gardens, Cleatham Hall is home to the elegant Orangery restaurant, where guests can enjoy lunch, dinner and afternoon tea.
Chef Danny Porter, who has 25 years’ experience and previously worked with the corporate hospitality team at Manchester United FC, has created menus featuring classic “unfussy” seasonal favourites, including Gressingham Duck with Morello Cherry jus, home-made soups and fruit pies, plus fresh fish, pasta and vegetarian dishes.
Another highlight is Kate’s talent for creating home-made culinary accompaniments, such as her delicious signature elderflower cordial, as well as organic jams, marmalade and Czar plum pickle, all made from fruits and berries grown in the orchard, which are also available to purchase.
The Orangery
As well as lunches, Cleatham Hall is popular for its afternoon teas and it’s well worth the drive out if you’re planning to explore the area’s unspoilt countryside. It’s a perfect base for walkers and cyclists too.
Overlooking the lush gardens, The Orangery is a beautiful dining space where you can enjoy relaxing over a leisurely meal in a peaceful setting. On arrival, guests are invited to relax in the small bar area or elegant sitting room while perusing the à la carte and table d’hồte menus over drinks, taking in the magnificent décor and collection of period features that have been preserved in the house.
In warmer months there are also al fresco dining options with cosy fireside comfort in the winter months.
Served from 12noon to 3.30pm, the Cleatham Hall Afternoon Tea (£30 per head, booking essential 24 hours in advance) is a meal in itself, featuring classic savouries such as a variety of finger sandwiches, Lincolnshire sausage rolls, basil pinwheels and Mediterranean vegetable muffins, alongside traditional home-made sweet treats such as vanilla scones, Eton Mess, brownies and mini choux buns.
The portions are generous and also feature “starters” such as individual soup cups with vegan and vegetarian options – and if you feel like really spoiling yourself you could also add a glass of Prosecco (£6.50).
Cleatham Hall also runs regular special Supper Club events with different themes throughout the year which are proving popular with locals and visitors alike, as well as entertainment from popular local bands such as An Evening With The Moggies on 15th August.
Although Cleatham Hall is an impressive house, you don’t feel intimidated by its elegant grandeur as the warmth of its owners’ welcome provides a perfect prelude to this oasis of peace and tranquillity.
