Barbara Young explores classic English menus over a leisurely lunch at the iconic Kingsway Hotel in Cleethorpes, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.

Having first opened its doors to guests in 1926, the award-winning four-star Kingsway Hotel has earned an unrivalled reputation for its excellent hospitality and cuisine in the most beautiful surroundings, topped off with time honoured traditional service.

Taking pride of place on Cleethorpes seafront and featuring a striking Art Deco interior with echoes of an ocean liner, this majestic hotel, which has recently been extensively refurbished, has become a firm favourite with many returning guests.

The hotel changed ownership in 2020 and since then the Christian family have worked together to bring a more modern feel to this grand building, but without losing its timeless appeal.

Whether you’re planning a meet up with friends or celebrating a special event, the Kingsway lounge, bar and celebrated wood panelled restaurant, which holds one AA rosette for culinary excellence, is a great place to spend quality time.

This historical venue provides the ideal setting to relax and enjoy luscious lunches and sumptuous dinners with outstanding views overlooking the Humber Estuary to the North Sea, creating an enjoyable dining experience.

The hotel prides itself on its friendly welcome and “nothing is too much trouble” vibe which is evident from the moment you walk through its front doors. Although service was busy when we visited on a weekday lunchtime, we didn’t feel rushed in making our menu choices as we were invited to sit and relax with a pre-luncheon apéritif in the comfortable lounge area where many guests were also enjoying taking their time to unwind and catch up with family and friends.

MENU SELECTION
With vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options well catered for, there are two menus on offer to choose from at lunchtime, both inspired by a love of modern British food.

Guests can choose from an À la carte or a special set two- or three-course Centenary Menu, which features many traditional favourites, including home-made pie, Beef Bourguignon and Steak Frites with a choice of classic peppercorn, Béarnaise or Diane sauces.

Having been shown to our bay window table with outstanding views across the sea, complete with added elegance of crisp white tablecloth and neatly folded napkins, my colleague had no hesitation in selecting her starter.

The Crispy Chilli Beef featuring tender strips of well seasoned steak sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds and served on a bed of fresh green salad leaves with just the right amount of spicy “heat kick” proved an excellent choice. My selection of freshly made home-made Soup of the Day – a cheerful tomato and red pepper blend – served with warm bread, proved deliciously hearty and warming – ideal nourishment after a bracing walk on the promenade.

Being at the seaside, we chose a freshly caught whole skinned grilled Dover sole, served on the bone, accompanied by Marquis potatoes and asparagus, served with a delicate and silky tarragon velouté and lemon wedge, which proved the perfect combination.

This firm-fleshed flatfish with its signature mild, sweet and buttery flavour was perfectly cooked and presented – another good choice!

Keeping with the meat-free theme, we also ordered the Mushroom and Charred Spring Onion Risotto, which was dressed with thin parmesan shavings and whipped mascarpone. This creamy and comforting Italian arborio rice dish also proved a hit, perfectly balancing the earthy, savoury flavours with a smoky sweetness.

TOP CLASS EXPERIENCE
Leaving just the right amount of time between courses, the hospitality team consistently earn high praise from diners for their friendly customer focussed service, and it’s easy to see why!

Even though we both felt very contented after two courses, we couldn’t resist completing our lunch experience with desserts.

For our third course we selected the Kingsay Crème Brûlée, a deconstructed version of a classic served with a toasted tuile, and a Sicilian Lemon Tart, filled with a smooth, rich custard made from zesty, fragrant Sicilian lemons and served with basil granite and meringue. Two excellent choices that proved the perfect finish to a memorable meal.

With its beautiful interior, fabulous views and AA Rosette awarded status, it’s no surprise that The Kingsway has earned an unrivalled reputation as a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.
