The Café Courtyard definitely had more than a touch of empire about it on the day I visited, with Union Jack bunting decorating the gloriously sunny atrium to celebrate the Queen’s Coronation Jubilee. The tall palms and comfortable Lloyd Loom chairs completed the colonial ambiance of the café.
Located in the courtyard of the former Angel Inn, this is a perfect place, in the heart of the town and this busy community hub, to meet up with friends for tea or coffee or spend a relaxing lunch.

There is a menu of delicious teas, coffees and hot chocolate as well as freshly made to order Shmoo milkshakes. I opted for a nicely chilled sparkling apple juice. Looking through the menu it was hard to make a choice between tasty, homemade soup of the day, an oven prepared jacket potato with a choice of fillings, or one of the fresh rolls, tortilla wraps or paninis. The paninis offered some enticing combinations of ingredients. There was beef and Stilton; chicken, bacon and mozzarella; roasted peppers, onions and haloumi. Finally I went for the goat’s cheese and caramalised onion. These are flavours which work so well together and it was a very satisfying lunch served with crunchy coleslaw and a balsamic dressed green salad.

The choice of homemade cakes was also too tempting not to try. There were seven on offer including chocolate, coffee, Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle and fruit cake but I had a slice of passion cake. Moist, fruity and served with a cream icing I enjoyed this with a skinny latte.

I decided that next time I call I really will have to have an afternoon tea. It is an indulgent treat which is very reasonably priced at The Café Courtyard. A selection of finger sandwiches, scones served with jam and cream plus homemade cake and tea for £7.50 per person, or £13.95 for two.

Brigg is a charming market town with an ever increasing variety of interesting independent retailers and programme of town centre events. Spend a day there and be sure to visit The Café Courtyard when you need to restore your energies for more exploring.
